I live on top of a hill, so my first action is bombing down said hill, in future rather than panicking about the wheel at high speed, it’s a good idea to create have a pre ride mental checklist. A lot less stressful.

After having owned two beautiful British Viscount Aerospace bikes in the 1970's, I have been known to inspect the intersection of the fork crown and steering tube, under the lower bearing race, with a very bright light. Unless these parts are all steel. The Viscounts never failed me but they had what became known as the "Death Forks" on earlier versions. I was in the US Air Force then and loved to fly, but not over the bars.

You definitely stuck with the right kind of flying there, Frank! Don't know much about the Viscount bikes or history, so I'll have to check that out. I have an old Carlton from 1975 that I restored a few years ago and at the moment it's probably the one I'll never part with! Thanks for the comment. 🙂

Nice pre-ride tips. I wish I was that through though frequently I am not! Take care and ride safe. Jay

First thing for me to check is the safety equipment - i never start the ride without the helmet and gloves.

You check your gloves for holes?😂

Often I'm ridiculed for cleaning my bike after each outing but what I'm really doing is also checking for each of the very good points you mentioned before the next outing. A friend did have a front through axle pin work loose which caused movement and noise in the wheel, first noticed whilst braking (disc). Luckily it was remedied before any incident occurred.

Thanks for the comment, Ian and interesting to hear it's not just me that's had a wheel come lose on a ride - glad it was spotted in time! A good system there to clean and check after each ride. I 'lost' the outside tap and hose when I last moved house so must admit the post ride cleaning is a little less frequent these days. A little easier now the weather's improving! 🙂

Good advice. The quick release lever would drive my ocd nuts lol I have to have it inline with the frame .😂

Haha. I'm fairly relaxed on that front but water bottle logo/lettering that isn't lined up nicely with the down tube when I set off ... I'd be stopping for that one to sort. 🙂

Good stuff as always. It pays not to go above or below max - min tyre pressures from tyre & wheels manufacturers. I have RC520 bike - great bike. - headset bearings are difficult to get hold of . Have you ever replaced yours. Keep up the good work!

Thanks, Andy. Cracking bikes, aren't they? I did a clean and regrease on the bearings a few weeks ago (much needed after several years' use in all weather) but haven't done a replacement. Would like to get new cage and bearings in there at some point though, so if you ever find out where to get them from drop a note here I'd be really interested! Happy cycling!
