A great video for beginners :) You can also win by rendering your opponent's pieces unable to move. Playing competitive Draughts jumping is of-course compulsory, however friendly games I have played with kids I have allowed the "huff" removing an opponent's piece for not jumping. This doesn't work in a serious game because it doesn't allow for a strategic move of giving away several pieces to plan more cunning manoeuvres.

@@EricBuffington I used to play in tournaments years ago when the game was more alive here in my country. It warms my heart however to see such a video as yours sparking interest in this great game so I thank you for promoting the game. Even though the game has been solved by the computer , we as humans are not machines and can still enjoy some of the amazing shots played by the old Masters like J. Wyllie aka "The Herd Laddie", N.W. Banks, C.F. Barker, W.Hellman, A.Jordan, R.Stewart, R.Yates, R.Jordan, S.Gonotsky, L.Ginsburg, A.Long and M. Tinsley. Some of the greatest players to ever grace the game!

Thanks very much. I recently learned this game by just observing when my friends was playing it. I was just concernned and confused about how you "double" piece for king. We calling it "crowning". You showed me how to understand the "king" move. Thanks.

Where i come from the king works a bit different. Of course he can move back and forth but he also can essentially move as far as he wants. so he can move 1 field but also 5 or 6 fields as long as it is possible
@Kawiesh

Yeah I've always played it like that. Kings are not limited to move one step, they can move as many steps as long as the path is clear. Also it's obligatory to jump, when you have to. That's how I've always played it.

A checker does not become a King if, while making multiple jumps, it lands momentarily on the opponent's end of the board, but ends the turn in the middle of the board. To become a King, a checker must be on the opponent's end of the board when the turn is over.

I didn't expect to be the same as chess. Coz in chess the queen can move anywhere. And in draughts it is the same exact rule but in draughts you only get to kill your opponent by the jumping rule. For chess you can automatically just kill your opponent right away
@EricBuffington

definitely a little different, and less complex than chess. If you understand chess, this will come easily, but it will also have several differences.

How about flying Kings? Is that part of any legitimate variants of chess or is that something made up by people? I ask because there were times I'd play depending on who I played where Kings were allowed to fly and capture a piece on the other side of the board if it was vulnerable? It was fun indeed.

Hi there, I like your video. I have just one question. With a regular piece starting on B3 can I jump over in enemy piece on C4 and land on to D5 and then jump over another enemy piece on e4 land on f3 (in one move)? What I'm asking is can I reverse directions with the regular piece if it is an attacking move? Or can only a king can do that? Thank you!
@EricBuffington

The only piece that can go in reverse is a king.

In Sri Lanka we used to play a game called Damm(Sinhala language word) with same rules which the board contains 144 squares (12 by 12). Is there a difference between Checkers and Draughts. I saw the boards comprising 8 by 8 squares and 10 by 10 squares are used for this game. How do you choose the amount of the squares before the game.Is there a rule.
