I recently met up with Jonathan Chappell, a checkers master and longtime friend, who played in the 2023 U.S. National tournament held in Branson, Missouri, this past month. Jonathan finished tied for fifth in an incredibly strong field that featured multiple world champions and grandmasters. We analyzed some of his favorite games, and in this particular video, we go inside the mind of a master as Jonathan provides us with move-by-move details into his strategy against third place finisher and elite master-class player Joe Moore. Despite losing this game, Jonathan considered it one of his favorite games from this tournament. For Joe Moore, this game and the game in which he beat world champion Alex Moiseyev were his favorites.
They balloted the 10-15, 24-19, 15x24 opening, which is considered fairly even for both sides. Jonathan went into an early published play loss, and Joe executed the win to near perfection, avoiding some natural sequences along the way and instead playing key moves to secure the victory. There is some brilliant end game play by both players, with many instructional points.
Stay tuned for part 3 featuring a game against Lubabalo Kondlo, a world champion and winner of the 2023 U.S. National tournament.
Part 1: Jonathan Chappell vs. Dr. Richard Beckwith (9-13, 24-20, 11-16), red wins.
Part 2: Jonathan Chappell vs. Joe Moore (10-15, 24-19, 15x24), white wins.
Part 3: Lubabalo Kondlo vs. Jonathan Chappell (9-13, 22-18, 12-16), draw.
