I didn't prepare for this one at all; sort of filmed it on accident! When I realized that I had caught myself on camera doing a manual exam on our Berkshire gilt, Cerra, I decided to go ahead and try to make a quick video about how to check for stuck piglets in the birth canal. Head first or tail first, BOTH are normal presentations. Complications usually only occur when a piglet is too big to fit through the pelvic arch, OR when two pigs tangle up side-by-side and create a traffic jam. It is safe to gently apply outward traction on the bottom jaw, the muzzle, around the base of the head, the front legs, the back legs, and even the tail - whatever you can grab! Sorry for the low quality - she decided to go into labor in the middle of the night and the lights aren't great in the pig barn!

My husband and I have been farming for nearly 30 years; we've learned a LOT during that time! Despite the fact that I have a degree in Animal Science and my husband has a degree in Agricultural Science, we continue to step outside the box when it comes to animal husbandry. Our goals are to raise happy, healthy animals that can provide our family sustenance and, at times, profit. It's my pleasure to try to share some of that knowledge with you!
