Worked for Thales back in the early 2000s on the MBITRs, but the P/T 25 was one of my favorite radios that this company made. Customers did complain about the battery life on these and because it was only a single band radio, management didn't want to spend the IR&D dollars to build a bigger. better battery for these. Thales was marketing their new, PRC 7332 liberty radio which was bigger, heavier, but was VHF/UHF/700/800 capable. Also, these units were TOUGH. Here's a Thales video of a kind of "test" that was conducted on the Liberty. I would not try this with any radio that can work the ham bands. Enjoy. kzitem.info/news/bejne/mpej2Ytng5Vpkpg

@@keithcar I still love the PRC6894, it a great radio. I've purchased a couple of them over the years and they are great performers on FM (analog). Unfortunately, there are not many people or repeaters using P25 on the 2 meter band. Unfortunately, finding Li ION batteries for these has become almost impossible. The Liberty radios are newer and there seems to be more accessories out there for them; especially batteries with the after-market sellers. Racal/Thales has had real success with the AN/PRC-148 MBITR and later with the "JEM" MBITR." Unfortunately, because these radios have TYPE 1 encryption hardware built into them and are Controlled Cryptographic Items (CCI), no one but authorized uses can legally have them. There are "Clear MBITRs" (PRC-6809) out there that are set up for TYPE 2 (software based encryption). These are very expensive and you almost never seen them available resellers. The Liberty was seen as a kind of MBITR for the civilian market. A tough, multiwaveform, multiband radio that allows inter agency comm at a (reasonably) affordable price. If you want a "tough as nails" radio that performs well on the 2 meter and 70 cm bands, the Liberty is a great radio to own. A Liberty is my "go anywhere - daily use" radio. It has seen some wear and tear, but it is continues to work great even with thousands operating hours on it. They are NOT cheap compared to other radios, but then, try throwing a Chinese made radio off a building and see that happens. ;-)

My wife Sarah and I designed a smart battery *So it runs at 5 watts) and used three 21700 5,000mAh cells (The new ones in the Tesla) and a group bought up a couple dozen and reported getting 3 days in the field so hopefully this fixes the one weakness. Very cool to speak to someone from the inside. Do you know if there is anyplace where I can find the software to do tune up? I've written a program using the commands I know to adjust the master osc but the actual inhouse? software or a list of more of the commands is still on my wish list.
