Checking & Replacing a Honda CB750K Starter Motor | Engine First Start Preparation | Part 4
Honda CB750K Bitsa - Engine First Start Preparation - Checking and replacing the starter motor
In this video, I check the starter motor, and finding faults replace it. The starter motor was noisy and seemed to be locking up and although the bike could be kick-started, I decided to investigate it before going any further.
Having removed the gearbox and generator covers I could see the starter pinion and starter clutch. I expected there to be a problem with the starter clutch but found that some teeth were missing from the starter pinion.
When I replaced the starter pinion I noticed that the cog on the end of the starter motor moved a lot. It appeared that the bearings may be shot, so I decided to take it out and change it for a better one.
Removing the starter is easy and hard! Easy because there aren’t a lot of bolts to undo. Hard because where the starter mounts to the engine at the back there is a lip around the machined face where the bolt goes through! This catches on the boss that is cast into the engine that it screws to. Just a little bit of machining on either the starter or the boss would have made this much easier to get out. Ho Hum!!!
I had to remove the cam chain tensioner as part of this job, so I had to reset the cam chain tension when I had replaced it. I used the static method which is in the original workshop manual. The more modern manuals seem to recommend setting it with the engine running.
Once I had completed the job the starter works a treat and is a hell of a lot quieter! :)
