This video has been shot at Running Wild Conservation in South Africa, where I've been volounteering. It shows the first hunt of two cheetah cubs out in the wild, their first training to their future reintroduction back into the wild.
Kiara was taken out on a casual walk with unrelated Abigail and Abi's two cubs. Midway through the walk Kiara was focused on some Blesbok (South African antelope species) on the horizon about 150 meters away and went into hunting mode. We decided to let the hunt commence as the cubs were following Kiara and would hopefully learn something from her. We knew that the cubs will only follow for a minute or two and then return to their mother, therefore we were not too concerned. They are still too young to participate in the hunt, they could easily get injured. Kiara made a fast and effective kill, and to our amazement she allowed the cubs to join her feeding off the kill. This is out of the ordinary behaviour as cheetah females are solitary hunters and do not normally let anyone apart from their own cubs near their kill. Kiara possibly realized that these little rascals need someone to teach them the skills of hunting because their mother cannot hunt due to an injury she encountered at a very young age when she was still owned by another facility. Kiara was also very comfortable with Abi around, she showed zero aggression. This is wonderful news as we will be able to use Kiara in the future to teach these cubs how to hunt with minimum human interaction to ensure their future in the wild will be a success. It was such an incredible experience for us to observe these special spotted cats during the hunt and the feast afterwards!
