+Me me Yeah, but personal tutors can really focus on what you are wanting/needing to learn while videos on the internet just go over hours and hours of the topic and sometimes doesn't go into enough detail of what you need. So although I love free videos on learning subjects, a personal tutor would help me way more understand everything. But yeah I don't think you should spend too much money on that haha.

The table that he showed doesn't always work, for example AlCl3 , as he shows it is a Polar covalent Bond(3.0 -1.5 = 1.5) but it is an ionic bond , becouse an ionic bond is a bond between a metal and a nonmetal. Thumbs up so people can see !
@MrLewisMovies
11 жыл бұрын
There are ionic bonds that consist of both non-metals, so it can be a bit tricky. But generally, an ionic bond consists of metals and non metals. A basic way to define an ionic bond is atoms with a big difference in electronegativity such as metals and non metals.
@whostolemyTV
8 жыл бұрын
Question: Ionic Bonds: if one atom loses an electron to another and then proceeds to bond with the atom which gained the electron, how is that different from a covalent bond? I mean if they're not sharing an electron, then what is holding the two atoms together? Also how would you draw an ionic bond, versus a covalent bond?
@SanamHaleemaBFFE
8 жыл бұрын
covalent bond: two or more atoms share valences electron. ionic bond: electrons are transferred from an atom of low electronegativity to atoms of high electronegativity.An atom loses an electron and becomes a positively charged cation whereas the atoms that gains an electron becomes an anion.

As a comment, it may be good to share that the metals ALSO have low ionization energy ( energy required to remove an electron) making it easier to remove metallic electrons. So, combined with the high electronegativity of nonmetals an ionic bond results.
@stephenanastasi748

So... I was looking at boron tribromide with my students. Using electronegativities, this is a polar covalent molecule. But the molecule itself is not polar because it is trigonal planar, and the polarities balance out. So... the polarity just refers to how balanced the sharing between atoms is, not whether the molecule has a net polarity bringing intermolecular interactions, right?
@smittencounter
10 жыл бұрын
It would be wayyyy easier to subtract the electro negativities like he does he here, but that's not possible for us who don't have a nicely printed out periodic table with the different electro negativities. He showed how to find who has more EN (top right of periodic table) but he didn't show how to get the specific values for EN of each element.

Hey can anyone help me? AlCl3 has ionic bond with covalent characteristics because of Al's electronegativity. However, HF is polar, it seems likely that ionic bonds would occur and yet it remains only as polar covalent. Why is that so? I know generally non-metals and non-metals form covalent bonds, and that HF does not dissociate fully in water (Weak acid) but based on the electronegativity shouldn't it be ionic? Just like how AlCl3 is covalent-ionic?
