Scientists have discovered that bacteria - primitive, single-celled organisms - communicate using chemical languages to synchronize their behavior and act in unison as enormous multi-cellular organisms. This process, called quorum sensing, enables bacteria to infect and cause disease in humans. It's an exciting story with fantastic implications. Studies on how to interfere with this chemical communication are leading to the development of new antibiotics to combat infectious bacterial diseases.
