I REALLY appreciate you making this video! You have confirmed my skepticism about chemical and physical sunscreens. I've also read that American brands don't require FDA processing to test sunscreens to see if they actually work. Ah OK - I think what they're referring to is that the FDA itself doesn't independently test SPF; rather, the manufacturer submits the sunscreen to a lab that follows the specific protocol for SPF testing, then submits their sunscreen to the FDA along with the testing results to get approval. That's the same for all countries AFAIK!
@michxmash

Lab Muffin Beauty Science I always have to refer to American studies because usually Canadian ones follow them (we also are highly saturated with American products lol). I just found it interesting that one of the articles said it could just be one test that's submitted, and how many of the common sunscreens don't protect as much as they claim. I'll just be sticking with the Asian ones, thanks for looking it over! :)

One day I just decided it was enough! And tried a chemical sunscreen, la Roche Posay toleriane spf 30, omg reapplying is a breeze! hi! why do most dermatologists recommend a physical sunscreen more? I have been using a chemical and combination sunscreen and my derm said it was the reason why my hyperpigmentation and dark spots worsened :((
@sangitadas4165

I think American chemical sunscreen still uses old filters which is irritating for sensitive skin and breaks down quickly under sunlight. But if you buy European chemical sunscreen then you will get advanced chemical filter which will give you great protection not only against uvb , they will give high uva protection which is even difficult to achieve from physical sunscreen because zinc oxide does not give UVA protection that much. They even mentioned the ppd value or uva pf value which very less sunscreen company have courage to let customers know.
@katydid5088
3 жыл бұрын
For yourself, skin irritation regardless of chemical or physical sunscreen type can worsen hyperpigmentation. Your derm, is essentially recommending a skin care reset to allow your skin to heal. By all means, you can try out a chem or chem combo, sunscreen later in a path test, but generally irritants of any kind, be it from sunscreen filters,fragrance, or a preservative will drive your hyperpigmentation. Chemical filters, in general (across Europe and U.S and Asia) tend to be very irritating to sensitive skin. Dermatologists are going with least harm to greatest benefits efficacy ratio so mineral sunscreens generally fit that bill regardless of which region of the world you travel to. While European or Asian sunscreens are photo stable, it doesn't guarantee you won't be irritated by the filters. Edit: spelling.

Hey! Even I believe that physical sunscreens work by absorbing UV (as u have shown using a uv light). But, there are many videos on youtube which show sunscreen under a UV camera..the chemical sunscreen shows up dark black but the physical sunscreen shows up whitish. They then say that this is because chemical sunscreens absorb buf physical reflect. I have seen atleast two such videos and one of them is from a reputable one. I can post their links..If physical sunscreens also absorb, then they should also look black... Please help me understand this!
@LabMuffinBeautyScience
3 жыл бұрын
Over the whole spectrum physical sunscreens absorb more, but they reflect a bit more in the UVA region. UV cameras only detect a narrow wavelength of UVA, so there's a lot more reflection there. Additionally, a small amount of reflection can drown out a large amount of absorption.

@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Thanks a lot for the explanation. I also wanted to ask two other things: 1) I don't believe my sunscreen. Is there any cheap DIY experiment to test it at home? 2) I lost my natural skin tone due to years of outdoor playing. It is said that the epidermis does a complete turnover in 2 months. By this logic, a person should get back their original skin tone if they avoid sun for 2 months. But I don't see people getting back their original colour by applying sunscreens and staying indoors in just two months. The dark spots people develop also stay for more time.What might be the reason? Is it because exposure to the sun at particular areas increases the rate of melanin production at those areas and so even after applying sunscreen, the new rate continues? 3) Current treatments to fade dark spots and regain skin tone involve actives which block tyrosinase to inhibit melanin production. But according to what I understand, this will only prevent the skin from developing further pigment and meanwhile your body will create new skin cells. Hence, the pigment would fade over a period of time, when the epidermal skin becomes completely new. This process seems slow to me! Is there any "active" which absorbs into skin and breaks the existing pigment(melanin) in the skin?

Hi Michelle! Thank you for this super informative video! Your videos have prompted me to be more conscious of my skincare choices. Would you consider addressing a few more sun protection related topics such as: 1. Layering sunscreen and sun tanning oil? From what I've understood from your video, it wouldn't be a good idea because oil may break down sunscreen or make it less effective. Is that right? Would you recommend tanners to go for the highest SPF content when it comes to buying sun tanning oil? Or is tanning oil with SPF just another misleading marketing? 2. Removal of sunscreen products: Would normal cleanser be good enough to remove sunscreen? Or would you recommend using micellar water/makeup remover to clean it off even if I have not applied any makeup? 3. Sunscreen blocking out Vit D: I saw a blog suggesting people tan with coconut oil instead of tanning oils because it is all natural, more hydrating and does not contain "harmful" chemicals and also mentioned sunscreen blocks out Vit D in the sun rays. 4. Comedogenicity of sunscreen ingredients: Is there any ingredients that you would like to highlight? Thank you so much for debunking all these assumptions and myths!

So many are telling me that mineral sunscreens work better than chemical because zinc oxide has better protection but every time I use a mineral sunscreen, my skin gets so dry, itchy and they would clog my pores, my skin would sting when I wash it off. Then they recommended to use tinted sunscreens that have lower zinc so they blend and dissolve in the skin easily with no cast but these provide lower protection and if I keep reapplying them, they make me look so orange. Tbh my skin is tryna tell me that it only likes chemical sunscreens because that is the only thing that does not irritate my skin. I am just suspicious of the amount of protection chemical sunscreens provide due to a lot saying they don't work as well because they are very light and not as thick.
@josephcheung6127

Thickness does no make a product less or more effective. Look at the SPF ratings. Mineral sunscreens tend to be less water resistent and less even coverage as the zinc particles are bigger. where did you hear chemical sunscreens have less protection? Generally thinner more comfortable Asian sunscreens have UVA rating available and is better , and its better for day to day exposure. Australian SPFS are generally better at being water proof if labeled that way.

Gosh, you are full of knowledge. Thank you so much for the information. Love your videos. I have a question for you. My main concern is that I get tan very easily and quickly. Which one Chemical or Physical SS would you recommend? How do I take it off at night? My skin doesn't like oil cleansing at all. Do you have any favorite brands that is available in US?

Another amazing videos... What are your thoughts about alcohol denat, oils such as argan or sunflower oil, and retinyl palmitate in sunscreen? Thank you!!! I can't believe I found your vlogs only this week!!!

Thank you so much Michelle! Like you I live in Australia and find your videos so helpful to examine Australian products that I can get more easily! I have annoying skin in that the zinc based physical/inorganic sunscreens look ok on my pale skin rosacea prone skin, but I just can't stand the texture and thickness catching on my skin flakes (I also have oily skin so sometimes it makes me get pimples too if I have to reapply a lot outside urgh!). For everyday use I have recently purchased the Canmake Mermaid Gel I found at an Asian skincare store in the city; I am hoping my sensitive skin can tolerate it as I love the more lightweight texture! Looking forward to seeing more of your reviews and explanations :D

Thank you for making this video!! But i really curious about sunscreen that used in a beach, there many people say that physical sunscreen is better than the chemical one in term of protection and it is more safe for reef life... is it true?

Why do mineral sunscreens make me tan less than even higher protection chemical though? I heard mineral actually lasts much longer, while chemical degrades within two hours whether you spend that two hours in the sun or not. Maybe that's why? Because people are told to get mineral for hyperpigmentation as well, and they say that's the only type that faded their dark spots.

Oh my goodness I am so happy I found your channel. Can I layer my chemical sunscreen over my mineral? I like to put a physical tinted sunscreen on in the morning before work (healthcare mask all day) then when I get to my car after work I put my chemical sunscreen on because it's lighter and goes on easier. Will I still get protection from the chemical sunscreen? I'm thinking yes since it works immediately, which I didn't know until watching you. Thank you!

Yeah avobenzone fucks me up with the itching and redness, and I live in America. I've been able to find pretty good tinted mineral sunscreens but I need to try the newer organic molecules.

Did you say if it's ok to apply over moisturizer? Also is OCTINOXATE good if it's not paired with Avobenzone?

maria G It's still a bit less photostable, but it's hard to say - it's possible to stabilise the combo as well, so not all sunscreens with that combo are bad!
