The track is exceptional! It simmers - tough to make something like this cook, but it does!!! Her voice is the perfect complement to it, and the extended version is wonderful for those like me who can't get enough of it. I'd say this is among Cher's top 3 recorded moments - what a total package. (PS - I hadn't realized I posted on this page 7 years ago. I stand by what I said, although "Believe" and "Baby Don't Go" also get an endorsement from me - as if it matters....!)

Yea, I always preferred this version as they not only dubbed in an extra chorus but she repeats a line at the end "Why can't we spend our life as one" which adds for a better ending I think.

How can a man (Spector) produce a record like this with unmatched feeling and passion have been so cold and indifferent in many of his personal interactions?

Great song. Marc Almond does a stirring rendition of it that's well worth hunting down.

I like the vocal extras, but miss the original long guitar solo on the 45. Wish the edit had come after that. This is my favorite Cher record (probably the only one I enthusiastically like, actually) and one of my all-time favoeite Spector tracks - the beat just throbs as it cooks! I always wondered if this might have been a "progressive" hit with a hipper vocalist (for the time; Cher has certainly accrued enough "hipness points" in the ensuing years).

Curious... I'd been a fan of the Marc Almond version for years but the original had always eluded me. He's remained very true to Cher's version but I think his has the edge. Great to compare at last!

I first heard Marc Almond's version, and then this one. I first thought it's by mistake played at 33 rpm, but the voice is normal. This might be nice because it's the original, but it's terrible when you know Marc's remake. Listen to that one and get the shivers down your spine and tears down your cheeks ! And look for more, there are some very heartbreaking songs made by him.

Marc Almond was the support act on the tour in 2004 which I saw, he said he never met her. 🤔. Also, an interesting question to ask is why is the voice now nothing like this voice? To be honest, if someone unknown sang like this they'd be boo'd off stage.

I don't think hed do that in this era of his recording, he did that when DJs would play his records at all

@matt mammone, I hope you're still checking comments after this many years! Spector was a horrible human being but an astonishing and visionary producer and solid musician as well. For me, at least, his music transcends his personal awfulness - and yes, I was a progressive rock DJ and music director when this came out; we gave it a chunk of airplay. Remember, too, his credibility was enhanced in the progressive genre by his productions of The Beatles AND The Stones.
