I remember Cher doing an interview a few years ago and said when she first started giving interviews and her TV show in the 60s she was a "small town girl" and very shy. So she decided to say nothing so people would not realize she was unsophisticated. So anyway then they thoughts she was cool and mysterious because she said so little but just stared a lot. She thought that was so funny. She was feeling totally out of her depth and scared. Just shows some have a look and a style no matter.

"Dark Lady" itself was a really unusual pop song; all minor chords and harmonies, and a sort of tango-like rhythm. The arrangement too is "dark," sinister, foreboding, with (REAL) strings low in the register. After over 40 years it's still one of Cher's finest records. Credit where it's due to John Durrell (composer, one of the "Ventures,") Al Capps (arranger and conductor) and "Snuff" Garrett (producer) as well as Cher herself.

+Therese Eklund It's an instantly recognisable song with a catchy refrain and melodic verse, topped by a - let's admit it - very "cheesy" 70s strings section. I was 11 when this was played daily on the radio. I quickly forgot who sang it, but the melody - and the title - got stuck in my head. So in the Internet age I just typed "Dark Lady" into the search engine (I think it was Altavista) and found the answer. :-)

I think I was about seven years old when "Dark Lady" came out and I spent some of my allowance on the 45 (remember them? ;) ) . And proceeded to drive my mother crazy by playing it endlessly. Cher was the kind of singer I dreamed of being. She threw her head back and sang at the top of her lungs. I used to imitate her until I was as loud and brassy as she was, even once my voice changed.

If anyone underrates Cher's vocal strength they clearly have never heard her sing. Autotune was still pretty new when Cher used it for "Believe" which ushered in a new generation of fans, but I don't think anyone forgot about the 40 years of music before that where she sang from the soul. Even today she could probably outsing 90% of the current "musicians"

Couldn't agree with everyone's comments more! Love her, love her voice, the colorful narratives, her pipes...and one other MAJOR Cher thing: that girl could sell it. Her sincerity in delivering every word, wearing every costume is truly remarkable. A lesser performer couldn't do it once, let alone year after year for eons. This woman is truly remarkable. I am grateful she proved all of her simple-minded detractors wrong. That lady is a real superstar that the passage of time honored and history rewarded -- perfectly.
