16:39 I know I am super late, but both of them tried to save the helicopter. The radiation is so high, it fries most electronics including radio communication. Also the radiation probably made the pilots dizzy in seconds, so the orders for the helicopter probably never reached the pilot. The next one was ordered to approach from the west because the wind was coming from that direction and they hoped that way the helicopter can drop the sand from far away and the wind would carry it. The scene is based on a real event, there actually crashed a helicopter on sight, but the circumstances where a lot different in real life then in the show.

The worst of which more than doubled the release of Chernobyl. These, for the most part, were in desolate places and closed cities in Siberia and Kazakhstan and not reported. One accident was in Leningrad/ St. Petersburg! They had releases of weaponized anthrax among other things that wiped out whole villages. Those villages are no longer on the map. Welcome to Socialism. The helicopter crash was actually caused in real life by 2 things. First and foremost, it hit a crane after passing through the smoke. But the major issue was that the radiation given off by the reactor does 2 things. 1, radiation reaks havoc on electronics and 2 it gives off massive heat. I saw an inter view with a soviet general who said most of the helicopters were operating in temperatures as high as 100-110 degrees Celsius when over the reactor. So they actually did experience alot of technical malfunctions. Infact the soviets had to scrap all the helicopters used in the clean up operations after only a 5 or 6 flights. It's crazy to think about but the balls on those pilots man

If there was one thing I have to criticize about the way that played out I have to ask why the possibility of a bomb was not brought up. The Soviets were paranoid about American spies because they themselves were investing huge amounts in spies in America. It seems like at least someone would have brought up the possibility that the Americans either planted a bomb or payed someone to plant one. One man does ask early on "Are they bombing us?" But this is never brought up again. Esspecialy when they can't otherwise explain the situation it seems like the people saying there was an explosion would have at least suggested this possibility.

In regards to the helicopter scene: The blades broke because they hit the cable of a nearby crane (although in reality this event actually took place much later in the timeline, in December of 1986 if I recall correctly), and the reason the helicopter did not alter course after being told they were too close is because the radiation levels were so high that it was interfering with the radio transmission and they didn't actually receive the message.

It's possible to decontaminate a person affected by radiation. What I know is that you have to wash your body over and over with soap, flush your body of nutrients like vitamins and minerals and replace them with uncontaminated nutrients, and possibly, if it's a heavy enough dosage, a blood transfusion and bone marrow transplant. What I suspect is you also have to be washed with some kind of skin-safe radiation absorbing chemicals, though I can't recall what those are at this time, it might just be soap. Basically, with enough resources and knowledge of what you're dealing with, it's possible to safe someone even if they were exposed to high levels of radiation; the most difficult part is diagnosing it quickly and getting those affected promptly to a facility that specializes in or otherwise has facilities that could be used for decontamination over a prolonged period of time, as far as I'm aware. There was a man some decades ago that underwent just such a treatment, barring the blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants, and ended up fine. The papers nicknamed him the Atomic Man, in part because he would set off radiation detectors placed near him, but he was saved and lead a healthy life after the fact until his death. Scientists speculated that he would have suffered from cancer had he lived longer, but an autopsy showed that he had no pre-carcinogenic cells in his body - he was clean, basically.

That was a Starling dying on the pavement. The helicopter crash happened some weeks later, but it happened the same way, because it flew too close to the crane and the rotors hit the crane cables. They brought in 1600 buses from all over the Soviet Union to evacuate Pripyat - a real feat of the central planning system, that they could give such an order and it be obeyed immediately, regardless of the disruption to everywhere else of having all those coaches travel off hundreds of miles somewhere else for several days to get there and then go to where they took the people to, before they could go back to their normal routes.

A friendly PSA that a chernobyl type disaster (aka, core directly exposed to the atmosphere) is not possible on any different type of reactor. This is due to the fact that every other type of reactor has a containment building (strong enough so that airliners will pancake on them with no damage,) of reinforced concrete, and every other reactor is moderated by heavy water. If something catastrophic happens to the water and the control rods fail to insert themselves, the reaction will still shut itself down. In an RBMK reactor, if something happens to the water, and the control rods fail to insert themselves, the reaction will still take place, leading to disaster.

Helicopter pilot hovered too close to the reactor core. 1) The smoke from the reactor obscured the pilot’s visibility outside the cockpit and the blades hit a crane. 2) Prof. Legesov was more concerned about the pilots flying directly over the core where the smoke & radiation would kill the occupants in days, if not hours. 3) Boris understands resources (Boron and Sand) so the Professor’s expertise may help him manage the crisis effectively - and helicopter pilots are a resource.

They brought in buses from all over Ukraine and Belarus for that evacuation. You couldn't even catch a bus in Kiev at all for like a week, they'd all been commandeered.

@@zammmerjammer yes especially Korey Wise. There all tragic but his is the most tragic of all. Went to support his best friend during the interrogation. Got roped up in it. Convicted him to and got the longest sentence. Despite how miserable he and in deep pain everytime his parole came up he refuse to say he commited the crime in order to be out of jail. Much much repsect to Korey

The show didn't get their facts right. Any explosion would be in the ton range at most. Not the megaton range. The nuclear fuel could not detonate, and it would take a nuclear explosion to achieve that sort of power. The danger comes from shattering the fuel rods, and having small dust particles blown into the atmosphere. Even if that happened, it would not devastate most of Europe. You would be getting higher rates of cancer, but nowhere near as much as they are making out. I liked the mini series and I am sure they got a lot right, but almost everything the woman doctor told Gorbachov was wildly wrong.

In a socialist country, power is always right. If someone has a different opinion, it means that he is the enemy of socialism. In socialist Russia, power only worried when the number of corpses could not be hidden. There were people distinguished in the positions for the socialist party. You may not be able to do anything but if you were faithful you could even be prime minister.
