The National Cherry Blossom Festival (March 20 - April 14, 2019) is a citywide festival that celebrates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry blossom trees to Washington, DC by the mayor of Tokyo, Yukio Ozaki.
The National Park Service, which tracks the status of the trees’ blossoms, reported that this year’s peak bloom began April 1. This means an estimated 70 percent of blossoms on the Yoshino cherry trees, the variety that is most common in the area, were open Monday. The blossoms should stay open for the next seven to 10 days, according to the Park Service, giving spectators a full display through next week.
