Handel Weekend in Wardour Chapel, Wiltshire given in 2023 by Cherubim Chamber Choir & Orchestra,
conductor Harry Bradford.
JEPHTHA
Cherub & Seraphim, unbodied forms,
the messengers of fate
His dread command await:
Of swifter flight and subtler frame,
The lightning’s wingèd flame.
They ride on whirlwinds, directing the storms.
Here again this chorus has been selected because of its topical reference. Handel’s 1751 oratorio Jephtha (HWV 70), to a libretto by Thomas Morell, was his last. During its composition Handel began to lose his sight. Reaching the end of the chorus ‘How dark, O Lord, are thy decrees’ he added “unable to go on owing to the weakening of the sight of my left eye.” The work was premiered at Covent Garden the following year.
Cherubim Music Trust is a charity that loans professional-calibre orchestral instruments to advanced music students in the UK, aged 15-25, who cannot afford one that matches their ability. See cherubimtrust.org/
