Yesterday, I, as a typical club player, played a 98% game. Perhaps I would be accused of cheating, but it was an anonymous game (Lichess, not logged in) so no, I was not. Someone just looking at my percentage (wildly better than my typical blunder-filled game) might reasonably think so. That's the problem with just looking at numbers, which is unfortunately what Kramnik does. We all agree that cheating is a problem, just not so clear on what to do about it.

Many people when responding to cheating accusations amongst GM's use the fact that they're GMs as a reason they aren't cheating. This is STAGGERINGLY ignorant of how cheating in competition works. Cheating scandals nearly exclusively occur from genuinely good players. Kramnik's implications about Hikaru may have been baseless, but "But Hikaru is really good" is not the valid defense. The valid defense is a lack of evidence of cheating.

With all the people that he falsely accuses, I can see why that's annoying and it would be better for Kramnik if he focused on his game more rather than how "suspiciously" his opponent is playing against him.

Besides what Nelson has mentioned, Hikaru has discussed cheating several times, and he has mentioned that at top GM level, even if you only know the evaluation at a critical point will help you a lot. This is really a threat to the chess world in that it isn't too hard for any GM to use stockfish to get a huge advantage and it's nearly impossible to prove But I need to disagree with Nelson on the Kramnik part. The reason Kramnik is seen as a clown is not because he accuses a lot. The true reason is two-fold: first is that as a retired top player, he can annoy anyone by accusing them of cheating, and only receive unimportant punishments; the other one is that he highly relies on performance rating and common sense to catch cheaters, where both are very unreliable in statistical problems, while he simply refuses any disagreements, even those from statistics experts
@H4mStr4mGr4m
4 сағат бұрын
The problem with Kramnik is that he accuses everybody with very flimsy arguments and no evidence. Combine that with the fact that he's a very sore loser and it really becomes abnormal and pathetic. Now of course one of the dozens of people he's accused is bound to be a cheater at some point.

To really get control over cheating, FIDE would need to improve procedures. For the most important games, it should not even be real time reporting of the moves, as it makes it almost impossible to prevent accomplices off site to relay moves. There are so many ways to get a message to someone. If the building has windows, the cheater could just glance outside where the accomplice uses semaphores, in form of window blinds, arrangement of objects on a car dash, garments on a clothesline, etc. Ad nauseum.

FIDE should start stripping people of their GM titles when they are caught red handed like that. Especially young players. Because if he or she is young, a GM, and already cheating... There is a high probability they got their GM title by cheating. A lifetime ban can also help to dissuade others from doing the same.

I suppose it's like any professional sport, some people are always going to cheat because there is prestige and money on the line. In chess, prestige more than money, but the prestige is pretty big. Also, if you as a player have hit your plateau, and can't break through, the pressure to improve despite a lack of ability is going to either drive you to accept your position, or to cheat.
@Pouncingpuma7
2 сағат бұрын
There is not much to do about cheating that isn't already being done, because in reality there aren't any such thing as "stockfish moves", there's just strong moves that GMs usually find and incredibly strong moves that they sometimes can find, but the engine will never miss. There are moves that seem to be "too good", but one or several moves is never enough proof, and simultaneously, GM level games are often decided by one or a few inaccurate moves. The only solution against cheating is players pledging their integrity not to ruin a timeless game for status, or worse for money. If you cheat in chess, you'll never have to lose, but you'll always be a loser.

It's terrible that it has to be this way, but tools like stockfish are so good that they incentivize cheaters who feel they can't play without them. One can only be honest for oneself and you'll go crazy if you analyze every game looking for cheats. But I am surprised that tournaments with grandmasters do not have more security, for want of a better term. With the state of the sport, it's not unreasonable to check everyone for devices as at an airport checkpoint and have folks in the bathroom.

Punish cheaters with one year, two years, even lifetime banns on elo receiving tournaments.
