I think this song appeared first in the Swedish version of Chess (Han är en man, han är ett barn) and was later translated into English. The original Swedish version by late Josefin Nilsson is classic, but this one by Reidun S is very well interpreted as well. Chess has great music all through the show/musical, always been my favourite.

I had heard that there were other songs that are not commonly used in the shows. I'm guessing that it might be sung by Svetlana. Thanks for posting this.

You’re welcome! I don’t know about other songs, this was the only uncommon one in our production I think 🙂

@@ArcticPhilharmonic not always is how to say it English „untertrieben“ the opposite of exaggerated 😂.. Btw I’ve always wondered that the most beautiful melody, known as when the waves roll out to sea only ended up in the Swedish language production and never in English language or at least not to my knowledge.

Beautiful song, but troubled show. Putting songs back in and out doesn't make this show any better, unfortunately. Works best in concert I guess.

Its funny, because the parts are there for an engrossing narrative but the creators can't seem to know what they want to do with any of it.

In it's simplest form, a Russian player falls in love with the American's second, Florence. Svetlana becomes a third wheel as she starts to lose her husband to Florence. This triangle usually occurs because Florence has a fight with Freddie, who acts like a child. However, this song is in reference to Svetlana being upset with her husband, Anatoly, the Russian because she us losing him basically. That's Chess in its simplest form. Sometimes there is a plot of Florence's father. In the Broadway, Molokov, intriduces her to a man who claims to be Florence's father. In the London version, the show ends with a possibility of Florence connecting but it just cuts to black by reprising Anthem "How to survive then, where would I start. Freddie may loose or win in the first act. In Broadway, he win all the games and the crowd shouts U.S.A. U.S.A. in London, he looses the first match and then gets to be the commentator of the next match against Viigand. So as you can see, the plot has do many versions. However, if you think Chess in its simplest form of a love triangle, that part is generally consistent. Much of the London script is almost as dung through as Les Miserables. However, key moments occur during Florence and Molokov, The Interview, and The Deal, which tell alot of the story. The opening ceremony songs are just fun filler songs. My sister hates them. They really dint tell you much, except the Arbiter's word is law and how Chess is a big thing either in Merano Italy or Bangkok, Thailand. However, Difficult and Dangerous Times is a good song that introduces the opposition ( also called U.S. versus U.s.S.R). It's also fitting because Chess occurs during the cold War. But once again, to make it less complicated, just think of Chess as a love triangle no matter how many versions there are.
