I love all of the Mackinac Island tours. I am sharing them with Friends and family who have never been. We went for our 25th wedding Anniversary and got to stay three nights at Windermere House and we LOVED it. We had the best steak ever at the Iroquois Hotel and watched the sun rise every morning from the porch of the Windermere. We ate lunch at the Grand which is soooo worth the money and when you do that you can come back in the evening and hear the orchestra. My husband and I danced on the porch in the moonlight, we had it all to ourselves with gorgeous views of the Big Mac Bridge. It was so very magical. If you are going to Mackinac also take the historical island tour, it was amazing. Oh and have lunch at the fort! Beautiful views!!!

Just about to move into to a cottage in country . It looks like waltons home......and surround by a few trees. You've given me loads of inspiration ....thank you .💚💚💚💚 Always loved a shady garden , not exposed too much to sun . Looking to section off parts of the garden , so that theres plenty of places to hide. Feels like Alice in wonderland ........disappear via a rabbit tunnel and end up in paradise. Its stunning...... 💚💚💚💚💚

I probably commented on this video when it first came out but I’m revisiting it today. I always swing by this house when I’m on Mackinac Island to see this garden. It’s one of the best examples of a great shade garden that I think I’ve ever seen. Ferry horn at 3:25 😀

Absolutely inspiring. Clearly the homeowners have a lot of money, but I'm so inspired by the layers and the depth, and my favorite are all the structures that were built for this space. That harbor with benches is amazing; spot on replication to honor the history juxtaposed by the gate door and fence. And the retaining wall. And the taming of the trees and recycling of the cuttings for a natural nail free fence. Just AMAZING.

Laura, you were saying in another video that I watched today that you have this big space that you aren't using and that you might want to use it for animals. I like that idea too. But...I think that you have the perfect opportunity to build that "secret garden" there.. to make little garden rooms like we are seeing here. "Pocket gardens". Also now..with that brand new little boy, maybe some space for horseshoes...outdoor games. Whatever you do it's going to be the right thing.

What happened on Mackinac Island three years ago that started all the intense planting and restoration of the gardens? Also who paid for all the work and to achieve this result in three years I am assuming that 'not so young' plants were planted? The two gardens I have seen this one and Stroh Cottage are magnificent. These cottages are privately owned (though I believe the land is leased) who is responsible for maintaining the gardens? A lot of questions but I am intrigued.

Beautiful garden!!! Love the house color! Just a lighter shade than my house is painted :) I was wondering if lawn mowers are used on the island since no other motor vehicles are allowed. I heard once that there are only a fire truck and maybe one other motor vehicle there. Curious as to how they maintain their lawns.

Just an observation... It is not a Chestnut tree. Chestnuts are Castanea sp. The tree in the video seems to be some Aesculus sp. Common names for these trees include "buckeye" and "horse chestnut", though they are not in the same order as chestnut trees.

Wow, that is a gorgeous garden. Wish mine would look the same after just 3 years! Do you have any idea what kind of groundcover they used below the hydrangeas in front of the wattle fencing? I suppose is an evergreen of some sorts
