Doing a 3 flap (in this case 2 flap) graft on a potted Chinese chestnut tree. The seed used to grow the stock last year was from the same tree, Black Satin. Chestnuts are picky about rootstocks, so this helps to assure compatibility between the stock and the scion.
A seedling tree will produce a nut of unknown qualities, while the grafted tree will be a clone of a tree with known characteristics.
The plan is to set one of these Black Satin trees out with another variety named Peach, on land where no other chestnuts grow. All the resulting nuts will then be crosses between the two, making them prime candidates for growing out to find the next big thing.
