The presentation is excellent, but the ambient is too noisy and the camera was pointed too much at the presenter (GM chief engineer Tim Grewe). GM should produce a professional video with the same presenter in a quiet environment and more camera images of the 5ET50 EDU (Electrical Drive Unit).

Still can't figure out if the ICE engine actually powers the wheels or the generator only.
@CUN006

There's only one mode that the engine speed is promotional to the vehicle speed. Other than that, you have some modes that engine is powering the generator only or part of the engine power goes to the wheel side.

It's basically the Prius system. Looks like planetary gears between MG1/MG2. If there's a clutch between the engine and MG2 then it could decouple and be a little different. Cool no matter what.

Can anybody explained what MKV stands for in GM gen2 5ET50 (MKV) transmission?

What I don't understand is why it has such a "huge" engine. The average car only needs around 15 horsepower to cruise down the highway when directly driving the wheels from the engine. With the losses from running a generator to charge batteries to turn the wheels you might need 22 hp. Let's add on another 10 horsepower to run the air conditioner lights... so it seems to me that around 32 horsepower would be all you would need to produce from the engine. This would be a great application for a rotary engine by the way and it would only weigh maybe around 50 pounds, which would be a major weight reduction. Also a gasoline internal combustion engine is much more efficient at near to wide open throttle. The weight reduction would increase the electric range, acceleration, handling, and braking. Running a much smaller engine at or near wide open throttle would increase the miles per gallon significantly when the engine had to run. The only reason I can see that they put such a big engine in this car was so that it can handle mountain driving better. You might have to pull over and let the batteries recharge for a little while with the tiny engine but I would much rather have a car like that because of the benefits I mentioned, unless I actually drove in the mountains frequently. I saw these cars weight over 3,700 pounds, wow. They are very cool though and I might have to get one one of these days, or convert my 91 Honda CR-X into an electric vehicle. 🤔

A rotary engine, like the type they put in a Mazda in the '70s??? Terribly inefficient
@kevinward7498
2 жыл бұрын
@@DGill48 The rotary engines made in the 70s were very inefficient. They made major improvements in the newer engines but were set back by the EPA in this country. I had an '87 Mazda RX7 that I averaged 26 miles per gallon in despite exceeding the red line numerous times every time I drove it and making over 250 horsepower. I didn't even have the newest engine design to work with which is much more efficient. I achieved up to 29 miles per gallon at times. Comparing my car to piston engine cars of similar horsepower at the time my car was more efficient.

So after battery run out hybrid system gas+electric why less than Prius mpg.volt engine is 1.5L Prius engine 1.8L. I own 2013 chevy volt after run out battery I only get 35 mpg. My friend Prius he got around 50+ mpg. Don't worry about charging. I'm living apartment so troubled for charging.

To go 53 miles in electric only requires a bigger battery, which weighs more and takes more gasoline to haul around. The electric range of the prius prime is only 25 miles. You can get electric range or MPG but not both.

Best demonstration of the Voltec mk.2 by far visually. I just wished the background noises wasn't so loud. The ingenious here is how GM added the extra planetary gearset/power split device onto an existing one to allow the engine to operate the wheels directly in context to its rpm range, something the Voltec 1 only did at higher speeds in a fixed drive ratio. Now the gas engine can effectively power the wheels directly without the conversion loss to electric to inverter/battery to traction motor.

Gen2 is like a downgrade. It adds more complexity(more moving parts) and it also adds a single point of failure (i.e. a chain) into the system. No surprise that this company was taken over my terrible marketing teams and thrown into bankruptcy. Sad situation.

Yeah, it started with a good idea, downsizing both motors And using them together. But you can't do that without adding clutches and things. I don't really see any advantage. Also, at least 95% of the time, ONLY the main electric motor will be used. Which means everything else should be tiny.

It's a financial decision. It's no longer feasible to make such car. The BOLT is its replacement. Today, batteries are way cheaper than when this car was originally conceived and far more charging infrastructure than in 2010. Lots of people criticize business decisions, but ignore the reasons behind it.

Not the best explanation of how the drive system works. Plus, once the volt gets to a highway condition above 70 mph the electric motor(s) either no longer provide any power to the drive-train or very little. Seems most drivers on the highway like to drive above 70 mph so not much in fuel savings or electrical drive there.
