Working on my mud truck and need to change one cylinder head. For some reason the pistons don't look stock to me. Anyone know for sure if these pistons are stock?
Good pistons! Flat top! To really give this guy a boost in power pick yourself up a set of vortec heads, you will need a special intake manifold but those heads are worth a ton of hp+ torque. Also, I think they come stock (the heads) on 96-2000 maybe later? 5.7 vortec chevy trucks and suv casting numbers "906" and "062" last three digits found cast into tip of head between valve train. 882 is a decent head also, but large chambers. The vortec outflow any other stock iron head and have an insanely efficient burn, turn advance down to 30-32 advance and you'll be throwing mud like crazy!

Thanks for all the info. The truck has sat on the back burner for a while now but my intention is to go back to carbed. I have had so many issues with this throttle body system because of getting wet and muddy. I have an old set of 300hp heads (camel hump) that I want to try. I also have a 480 lift cam for a carbed system. I pinned this comment to the top of the comment section i case I (or anyone else) need these numbers.

Dump the camel humps- not even a comparison between vortex’s and camel humps! Vortec’s all day every day every time! Nearly 60~100hp bolt on improvement! Vulgar Hyena is absolutely correct!!!

The valve relief design is for the the different compression carrecteristics depending on what heads you put on the motor if you look up your casting head number which are the last three on the head Google it and you can get info on what cc your heads are

Wow, now I'm confused. 2 other people said they're aftermarket. I know in the carbed SB 350 engines it was common to use flat tops but wasn't sure about injected blocks.

Yeh, that does help, but any idea why 4 valve cutouts? On top of the piston it has .040, so I'm asuming bored 40 over.

yep 40 over ,4 knotches so you dont have to figure out which side of the block to put pistons in. there is a mark on the piston that goes to the front.nothes are needed on opposite sides of piston for each bank
@MudRFunR

I also wondered why they would have 4 valve cutouts. Why 4?
@vulgarhyena9616

MudRFunR easy to cast all pistons the same so they could go on either side of the block because they all need to have the "dot" facing forwards. Makes sense, right? I asked the same question recently! Haha

The pistons also have a notch at the front to show whcih way they go in. Seems pointless to add the extra cutouts.

cant tell by looking at the vid what the pistons are,chevy put many diffrent combos together for any given year and model.measure the cylinder bores with a digital vernier caliper ( canada tire plastic one is good enough} stock bore on 350s is 4.00 in ,next size up is 4.03(30 over in hot rod talk) most people go with flat top pistons on rebuilds for a little more compression and torque,with stock heads(72 or 74 cc chambers) you have around 9 :1 compression.dont know if this helps.see u at dunes

havent had the chance to look yet, but im thinking so you can turn the piston whichever way you want, so you dont end up putting the cutouts on the wrong side and grenade your motor. but thats me
@minx163

NO wrong thinking . For one a stock piston has a .050 wristpin offset to prevent knocking on cold start up. But your half right as the notch would face the rear of the engine in a RHR application.

Those look like aftermarket flat top pistons to me. Is there a number stamped on the top of the piston. Number would look like .010 or .020 etc, if you see a number then you know it's not factory stock. Hope that helps
@needncash

Although the pistons are .040 over, the 4 valve relief style you are showing is the stock style piston. In Google, type in stock 350 pistons under Image and you will see them. The newer style now utilizes the 2 valve relief style.

@@MudRFunR These tbi blocks cam in 3 versions. Low, Mid, and High compression! The low compression had the the bigger (191) 76cc heads with dish pistons and was around like 8.5:1 or something then the mid had the (193) 64cc heads with dish pistons for around 9:1-9.3:1 compression these were in the trucks and vans and the high compression had the 193 64cc heads with flat tops for around 10:1 and those were in police/passenger cars. So the high comp did come with flat tops but I still think those are aftermarket pistons by the looks of them but could be wrong, you can tell if they are out of the block
@jjmccloud

Either way depending on which head u have high compression ain't a bad thing as long as it's still pump gas able lol. If u have the 193 heads then it'll be perfect but even with the bigger chamber 191 heads it's still around 9 so is still good for your truck. Unfortunately both those swirl port suck at flowing after about 4k rpm but for a mud truck would be great cause they do make awesome bottom end power

The Pistons you have are the ones that summit sells for $100 bucks for the set there hypertectic Pistons with a 64cc head you will have 9.61 compression and with your motor being 40 over your cubes Change it's not a 350 any more it's now a 357 those are good Pistons there not dome I'm running those same Pistons in my 355 with fast burn heads since my heads are 62cc my compression shoots to 9.81

They seem to be stock, just because they don't have the P/N inscribed on the top. I bet if you turn the block over and looked at the under side of it you would find a part number. here's a link to a good site for finding out what kind of piston it is: webpages.charter.net/beckracing/silvtoc.htm
