That's beautiful. I'd love to find something and build a small block for it. Tired of all these LS swaps. Sounds great too.

Back in the 70s people ignored the SB400 because it never came in a performance version and the stroke was too long and the rods too short to rev very high. It made good low RPM torque though. If you're rebuilding a used engine, it doesn't matter what it came with, you're going to replace most of it anyway. I built one in a '71 Caprice and it was just a mild, one step above stock cam, stock heads, headers and dual turbo mufflers and a Quadrajet intake and 4bbl off a '66 327 Corvette I got for $20. Ran better than I thought it would. Hit some ice one night going around a sharp bend and mangled the right quarter panel. Sold the car to a guy who just blew the 350 in his truck he ran in the local truck pulls. He didn't do a thing to it and said he was winning almost every weekend with that engine. He said it pulled so hard you'd think you had a big block. Around that time the 383 stroker 350 got real popular, which didn't make sense since the crank and rods were the reason why the motor was shunned to begin with. Tired of seeing crate motors and LS swaps. A true hot rod is built not bought. If your combination of parts yields a really strong engine, that's YOUR work and something to be proud of. If you screw up, that's how you learn. A place on KZitem put a 327 crank in a 400 block and called it the 350 Chevy SHOULD'VE made. He put it in a '64 Olds F-85 and made a ride along video to show how good it runs.

Chevys 400 small block was probably the best small block ever built in my book. Never built as a high compression high output motor from the factory as the only year it had 9.0 to 1 compression was the 1970 year and after that went to 8.5 and then to 8 to 1. Building them up with compression is easy to do and they make some brutel torque across the whole power band which is never possible out of a 350. Its too back production ended of these motors in 1980 making them hard to find now. Ive got a few and love them!
