There is two ball bearings and a little solid rod that goes across the three shafts. I was banging on the output shaft too.

It took me some time to figure that out myself too. The factory manual talks about it and has diagrams for it too.

are there 2 seals in the rear? or is the big seal used to hold the transmission fluid?

I just had my transmission stick in second gear. I believe it was the nv3500. I took it to Aamaco transmission shop for repair. They took it apart and started ordering wrong parts. It was a used transmission my buddy bought awhile back and put in. Anyway what would make it stick into gear? This repair cost me $3,000 to fix. I even removed and installed it back myself. It works great now but man that was a costly mistake. They didn't know what it was,but replaced the main shaft and 2nd and reverse gears.And probably a couple more but I think I got screwed royally! I didn't see this video a year ago so I'm kinda glad I didn't tackle this myself. You only know what you don't know sometimes huh? Thanks for the video!

Sticking in 2nd is odd, things that could cause that is shift forks getting worn down or out of alignment on the shift rails, or the input bearing becoming so worn out that the set of drive gears are able to move around enough for the shift collar to get wedged in 2nd but this all just guessing.

Did you push the bearing in from the back side or the front side bc im about to put a new input shaft bearing in
@homersipes

I gotta do input bearing as well. Looks like pull the front of trans off and replace from the front side, that why it has a snap ring to hold it in place.

I have a 97 GMC S/15 with a 5 speed. The RPO code says its a New Venture 5 speed close ratio. I bought truck special order with the Z85 heavy duty towing package. I wonder if it is the Ford tranny (Getrag). Getrag is half owned by Ford. The tranny is as smooth as silk and has 260,000 miles on it.

There should be a small nub on the side of the 5th/ Reverse shift fork that will push on the switch I would try and feel or look in the hole the switch goes in to make sure that nub is this there, it may have been worn down over time.

Hey, after getting this job done do you have any advice for removing the detent that you had to weld a piece to? I'm hoping to remove without welding but I guess doing that and using a slide hammer is the best way if it doesn't come out easily.
@ImpreziveGarage

yeah I slide hammer would be best a attachment like this or similar would have probably worked I just didn't have one www.amazon.com/Paintless-Removal-Adapter-Keenso-Pulling/dp/B07GT1QRFX/ref=sr_1_26?crid=YEZ7VIG6AOX6&keywords=slide+hammer+attachment&qid=1652329704&sprefix=slideham%2Caps%2C164&sr=8-26

I rebuilt my NV3500, which also has the detent. I was able to use the long handled pittsburgh trim tool. They come in a set. It worked well. I added some heat to the aluminum case and was able to pry it out.

Do you know what size the roll pin is inside the cup or an idea on where to find it? Mine broke and I'm having a hell of a time trying to fix it but that's the only thing wrong with it and I really don't want to buy the whole kit just for the one roll pin.
@ImpreziveGarage

I don't know the diameter of the pin but I did find it is 33mm long, I found a GM repair manual here www.73-87chevytrucks.com/techinfo/7387CKMans//Unit_Repair/X8937_1989_GMC_Light_Duty_Truck_Unit_Repair_Manual.pdf go to page 886 and 887 of the pdf and it shows the roll pin, I hope this helps if I find anything else i'll let you know.

Hello and thanks for the vid. I have a 92 Chevy Silverado. I am having a hard time replacing the starter. Its the first time doing it on a manual. On the passenger side of the truck right under the starter is this tube that comes out of this handle like looking part of the transmission. Its not a sensor or the clutch line. But it is right in the way of the starter and no one ive talked to so far knows what it is. I need to remove it so I can replace the starter. Its a metal that comes right out of the transmission right under the starter and flywheel housing. Any help would be appreciated.

Is it about a 1/2 inch diameter metal rod, one end should be bolted to the bottom of the transmission bell housing and the other end should bolted to the engine block, its basically a stabilizer bracket to help tie the engine and transmission together and add rigidity, once you unbolt it and move it out of the way you can get the starer out.

I’m putting the same transmission out of a 1991 Z71 behind my 1996 6.5 diesel. I was wondering how yours has been holding up. Can we get an update? Thanks.
@ImpreziveGarage
Жыл бұрын
It's been holding up well haven't had any problems with the transmission after the rebuild, and a lot of those miles have been with the truck loaded up with a camper, tools, extra tires, and towing the drift car on a trailer, most people say the nv3500 is weak but I haven't found that to be the case.

So seeing this after shipping my 4l80 off for a heavy priced replacement. I could have just used one of three of these getrags and 5 speed swapped my 3500 crew cab long bed that came with a 5.7 from the factory GM did some goofy stuff building these trucks. Very great and informative video! I'm definitely going to reference your video when I muster up the courage to attempt this.

I have a 2003 nv3500 with internal slave.. I got it ffrom junkyard couple years ago and finally installed it. I'm having very bad binding going from 2-3 like.the shirt rails are getting stuck. And when it does this sometimes just trying to put the shifter in neutral and move it left to right and back in the neutral position it's hung up then you'll hear some metal get unstuck and you can then move the shifter left to right in neutral. This happens even if the car is off. I'm going to buy the jig and rebuild it myself. Any thoughts on what to look for? This is 4wd.
