I don’t k ow if anyone will read this but here is my story about my 95 Tahoe in Phoenix az. I bought it June 3rd needing brakes, front end, axle seal, tires, valve cover, and water pump. I took it up to flagstaff (2 hr drive), left at 5 pm, for my birthday but a trailer crash caused a wildfire and made it a 9hr reroute STILL in the same state. Around 10pm my abs used whatever life left my brakes had on a sudden stop and shot em. For 4 hours in deer infested dark mountain roads I was driving without any breaks, riding 3rd gear on 7% incline. Landed in flagstaff at 3am. Drove home 3h30min the same exact way but with 7% decline. The truck has since been fixed and was so thankful this truck can just take it.

Lake Tahoe is beautiful. Cardboard writing is roadkill episode style. On a higher mileage engine lets say above 150,000 that you just bought ( not entirely sure how many miles you have) I would keep to conventional. I use synthetic because I rebuilt the motor years ago and know everything about my truck. 18 mpg is really good. Go AGR steering gearbox.
@AutoEdits
3 жыл бұрын
Good advice, but I'm still not sure why synthetic isn't good for older tired engines as well.
@suburbanfreak87
3 жыл бұрын
@@AutoEdits The seals are use to that engine oil. Synthetic has a faster flow rate than conventional. In a low mileage vehicle, nothing wrong with going synthetic, but from what I learned, I will only do it if its been relatively close to the rebuild mileage. I did the proper break in procedure, then synthetic at 3500 miles on the rebuild. Race engines might run it for a short time with conventional then synthetic, or run straight to synthetic. If its got high mileage, stick to conventional so that you don't risk leaks. Again, I don't know how many miles you have, but with high miles on a motor that has been using conventional, I personally would not switch to synthetic. Its still do at your own risk.

Jason, you mentioned you are getting 18 +/- mpg on the highway. What, if any, modifications have you made to accomplish that performance. I understand you have 456 gearing. We drive a 98 5.7/350 K1500 Tahoe on 35's with 411 gearing, 14 bolt dif, rear ARB air locker, we only get about 10-12 mpg. (Aside, I am told there is no front locker on the market to fit this rig. From you knowledge is this true?) At best when it was stock we got 14 mpg. We have own this rig since 2000, started rebuilding it a couple of years ago. Any suggestions? Thanks
@AutoEdits
Жыл бұрын
Getting 18 was only done doing math on google maps routes ... now that I have the speedo calibrated correctly the more accurate math sees closer to 16... but staying under 70 and the Milestar tires at 32 psi are remarkable on the highway. About that front locker, I've been told the smaller cast housings of the front differentials aren't really strong enough to survive a locker. So it's for the best not to install one... however, I've notice the 2500 trucks have a different front diff housing that can handle a locker... just finding one and making it work would be the challenge.

@@AutoEdits well I might get a little excited when I see you do a video in my area but it's happened twice now! I think one of the first videos I saw was when you almost got stuck outside Sparks, NV. Count me in if you ever consider it in the a Reno Tahoe area! 🍻

I have a 98 two door. I’ve replaced all those steering parts…not with heavy duty stuff…but it’s made little difference. It’s torture, but I’d replace them part By part to see what makes the difference. Tie rods…then arm…then pitman…then idler…then steering box…then steering shaft/rag joint. My novice opinion…it’s not all of it. I think it’s between the steering shaft and steering box.
@AutoEdits

Doing it part by part doesn't make sense to me. All new with upgraded parts is the best way for sure and a good alignment!

@@AutoEdits all good. Just sharing that I replaced all the components, over period of 4 weekends, including an alignment, and I can still steer my girl with my pinkie and it’s still Loose. PS - that included the half-shafts, ball joints, and shocks. So was simply trying to share that if, at the end, you only have marginal improvements…how will you diagnose what to address. Love your truck, my truck, only issue I have is the loose steering. Look forward to hearing about your success, so I can follow suit!

Great build series! Never thought I would be this into a Tahoe build, did you compensate for the 35’s speedo wise?

GPS to figure out MPG?
@AutoEdits
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I did use gps and actual math at the gas pumps to get 18.1 overall average. I did use one bottle of Lucas Oil "tune up in a bottle" Injector cleaner at each of the 3 fuel stops and honestly feel that stuff made a difference.

456 gears. Running 80 with only 2000 rpms. Is the speedo off? I want to change my gears but was afraid of the rpms.

Good catch... the speedo in this video is incorrect. I have since calibrated the speedo kzitem.info/news/bejne/x39om5OVjnN5iaA and the 80mph RPM is about 2500 and very comfortable.

Hey Jason! Awesome vid, that gear seems perfect for the 35s. I just ran across a psc steering box for a 2wd 1500 truck/suv and figured it would be worth letting you know. I can't find it looking through the vehicle selector only by using the link directly. So it occured to me they may have one for your K1500, you'll just have to give them a call. Here's the link to the quick ratio 2wd one: www.pscmotorsports.com/psc-sg283b.html
