A curiosity, gum was already consumed since ancient Greece, where they extracted gum, which is a type of gum from a certain tree. It must be one of the oldest candies in the world.
The first flavored chewing gum came about in 1860, when pharmacist John Colgan mixed powdered sugar with a tree extract. Then he decided to cut the natural product into strips and flavor it. From there, the chewing gum became a worldwide success.
To learn more about how chewing gum is made, let's visit a factory located in the United States.
It all starts with the gum. In the past they were made from resins taken from trees. Nowadays it is synthetic, made of plastic and rubber.
The gum is placed in a mixer. Then a solution to define the color and aroma is added. While the ingredients are being mixed, the liquid sweetener is poured into the drum. Because it is liquid, it helps to keep the gum soft.
Then the powdered aspartame is added.
All ingredients are mixed for about 20 minutes. Friction generates some heat, which causes all components to stick together.
With the mixture finished, the mass is sent to the pre-extruder.
The machine presses the entire mass and turns it into two thin ribbons that are transported by the extruders.
As the extrusion continues, the gum continues to be pressed, reaching its desired width. It is after this step that it is cut to the correct length.
In the extrusion process, the gums are heated, and to be packaged, they must be cooled in this chamber.
The gum stays for about 15 minutes, and the temperature varies between 3 to 7 degrees Celsius.
At its exit, the packaging film is placed at the same time as the gum is cut to length. This process is very fast and cannot be seen with the naked eye.
To understand, let's see the process in slow motion. As the gum is inserted into the film, it is cut and the ends of the package are twisted, closing it.
Arriving at the end, the gum is transported by conveyor belts to be placed in the buckets. The amount is measured by weight using an automated scale.
And finally the buckets are sealed ready to go to stores and supermarkets.
