Please always remember: We all knit with a different style, our hands have different sizes (and there might be other physical differences/limitations), we prefer different yarns & projects, and our general preferences might differ on top of that. As a result, needles I like might be ill-suited for you and vice versa. Needles that are well in your budget might not be in mine. So, when we as a knitting community talk about knitting needles, we should always comment from a place of personal preference and never generalize personal likes as absolutes.

Thank you, Norman, for going through the review and being willing to purchase this set. I enjoy my Chiaogoo Complete Set, the 4", so I was not interested in the 5" Fortè 2.0. An important point, the Red Heart should be used to grip the shaft of the needle - not the join- when changing tips / cables. I never had any issues with where to hold the tips with red lace or 360°. The breaking in 1.0 set was mostly contributed to misplaced grip during tip - cable changing. I prefer the Swivel 360° for specific types of yarn, and cable lengths, so I use both. In US, sells for $330 USD. In EU, I found 2.0 for $350 EU. I wonder if some shops are intentionally price gouging. If they offer the reclaimed Ebony Wood in 4" as stand alone tips, I would consider those. May everyone continue to love their knitting! 💜🧶

well, possibly, tho I did state that my price was including shipping. Since this was a pre-order only set where I simply couldn't walk into my LYS and buy them, I find it kinda fair to factor that in. Some shops might also have to calculate in tariffs and what not, and certainly sometimes exchange rates are really not in favor either (like currently in Canada or Australia) . As for the breaking tip: Both addi and Knitter's pride outright refuse to produce such small hardwood interchangeable needles because in all their tests they didn't hold up to their quality standards (i spoke with representatives from both companies; obv not with ChiaoGoo because they never answer). If you ask me, they were just sloppy with this set.

@NimbleNeedles absolutely, both Tariffs and VAT will increase the price depending on geographic areas. Interesting to learn about the smallest needles with KP + Addi. I liken it to what people are willing to pay for any specific product, Whether it is yarn, needles, or a fancy car. I was blessed to receive my set when the cost was under $150 USD, and it was a gift, just a few years ago. I have added cables & needles, even though I could have simply used my complete set and held stitches on yarn or the silicone tubing. Grateful for your insight and tutorials. I really don’t understand these sets that come with thousands of other accessories. If you pay this much for a set of needles you most likely are not a beginner and already have a tape measure, scissors and wayy too many stitch markers. I am perfectly content with my knitpro needles, I have the Symphonie and Day and Nite sets and I love them. Never had any issues or needles breaking in two years (and I knit a LOT), the cases are perfectly intact and the Smyphonie pouch has SO much room for additional needles and supplies, the swivel cables of the day and nite are amazing. It amazes me how you can pay almost 400€ when you can get the same value for less than a hundred.

I checked on the wood they are manufactured from, African black wood, it is a listed wood, endangered. So do we believe manufacturers in China are strictly using reclaimed African black wood to mass produce knitting needles?

Well, now I know that these kind of ethical considerations are less of a concern in China. And of course, it would have to be reclaimed wood, otherwise they'd have problems to important them into Europe. That being said, when it comes to China, I'd not trust what it says on the label. There's tons of chinese 100% cashmere yarns that have little to do with actual cashmer...other than being spun in the same factory ^^. You can also see great divergences in the steel quality when you look at different sets (say the Minis and the standard red twist). That'S probably because they are using different manufacturers and/or blanks from different manufacturers. I never was able to contact CG with my emails (nor HiyaHiya). That, in and by itself, says a lot, sadly.

At one point when someone asked about the wood , they were told ................... the black wood used is slivers of wood left over from making other things (someone if I remember correctly , used example of pianos) Seems if the smaller needles are breaking, and they have replaced majority of them with a different material , perhaps not the best quality or source was used in the original set

I'm a tight knitter too, and enjoy complicated patterns. Another problem I have with the interchangeable cables, is that no matter how well I think I have tightened the connecting screw, mine always becomes loose at some point and that's when the yarn REALLY gets caught. And it's such a pain to try to tighten the screw while the stitches are covering it. But I can't get them out of the way before I can tighten the screw first! 😵💫

Interesting. Some folk feel that paying more gets you better quality. I have had people on knitting groups show the red cables getting kinks after being used for magic loop for awhile. That would put me off, right away, as would the actual thickness of the cords. Another small problem would be the missing 3mm needles. Add to that the 'accessory' safety pins. Anyone using any sort of safety pin with yarn would much prefer the coilless variety, which are just as easy to find, so the addition of the coiled is just cheap, to me. Being barely able to read the engraved size? Really? For all this money, I wouldn't bother. I'm sure some folk will love them,
@NimbleNeedles

this set has 3mm needles! (don't ask me why..it seems random). And I agree with the safty pins and tapestry needle. These were clearly not choosen by someone who's aware of alternatives or is even a professional knitter. As for cables ending up with kinks. I think we need to remember that these are tools and tools are meant to be used. A plastic cable has various issues as well and will not last a lifetime either. So yeah, kinking can be a problem but then again, that's why you can exchange cables. So, I think we need to be fair - at least in that regard.

I've been using my red lace cables, only one in each length so they all get plenty of use, to make approximately 40 of my pairs of sock. I only magic loop for anything done in the round. Never had a kink with those cables. So I'm shocked that you saw any like that. It's kind of their thing...they don't kink. They are heavier weight than cables like, say, the typical Addi or the horror that are Boyes, and definitely not everyone's bag. The sizing being hard to read doesn't surprise me. Pretty much my only gripe about my Chiaogoo red lace is that the sizes are almost impossible to read. I'd not be into this set due to the squared shape (ouch) and the different material on the tips. I've used a set like those not by the same manufacturer years ago and the difference really bothered me, texture-wise. Oh, and the price. WTever-lovingF.

I absolutely hate swivel cables. I’m very happy with my far less expensive Chiao Goo red lace set in small, because I seldom knit with needles larger than 5mm. For the occasional bulkier project, I knew I would not enjoy stainless steel scraping around, so I either use my Lantern Moon Ebony, or bamboo.

I bought the first set as a retirement gift to myself. OVERPRICED GARBAGE ($450 in Canada). They replaced the small swivel gables with regular. Not the large ones which bound to catch. The metal part of the tip came off. Sure I can glue it back on but it should not happen. The extra tools are nice but not enough for the price. The stitch markers are cheap plastic and useless. The scissors are fine but like you said,nothing special. There isn’t enough space to add anything else. I do like the wood. I haven’t had breakage and I’m not hard on my needles. My set goes down to 2.75 mm. I can notice the transition. The only thing I like is the slenderness of the tips. I will never buy another ChiaoGoo product. I don’t care if they are the best. These were not and I feel completely ripped off. Had they been better I would still feel they are overpriced but would have accepted them. I can’t tell you how disappointed I was.

I have been knitting/crocheting for over 40 years and to me, we are being taken advantage of. Granted I have a set of interchangeable needles and hooks and I love them, no more using stitch holders when making a garment, no more carrying around needles that are almost a foot long, There are some very nice advances but I think KnitPro (knitters pride in the US) symfonie are very nice and they cost around £50 for the set, also come in other materials! Other people have other preferences and that is the joy of diversity. To charge over 6 times the price for a set that had to be recalled in the first version, then $75 added to the price for THEIR MISTAKES is being taken advantage of in my book

Sorry Norman, I wouldn’t be able to use a set like that. I like to keep my Turbo Rockets in the plastic sleeve they come in. I would get so confused which size needle is which. I accidentally lost the packet, even with my glasses, couldn’t read the size on the cable cause print was so small. I really don’t like any needles made in China. I use the scissors I got from Fashion district in Manhattan. I’m constantly having to measure a project so keep my collapsible tape measure I got from yarn store, near my project. I was lucky to find this two sided silk zippered case I got in Chinatown. I put my scissors, needle point needles for fixing of yarn, and stitch holders. I use an Art case I got on sale from Michaels to hold my circular needles. Sad to say all my straight needles I used to use years ago got tossed when house was sold. I forgot to take them with me. Circular needles don’t put a strain on my arms and wrists.

I was fascinated by the 'security' pins, then I realized they are just what North Americans call 'safety' pins. lol I appreciate your thorough discussion, Norman, as always you are full of accurate information and interesting opinions. The part I question is that the set is half carbon and half wood. Most knitters express a preference for a certain needle medium and don't like to knit with any thing else. So I'm not sure too many people will be satisfied with this mixed bag. Otherwise, I can see your criticisms of the leather pouch; just looking at it, I see a lot of wasted space on one side to make room for the accessories on the other side. I am a 'knitter of moderate means' - it took me 2 years to have enough money to buy my full set of stainless steel Chiagoos (12 sizes), but I absolutely love them. I enjoy the smoothness and accuracy of the steel tips and the non-kinkiness of the cables, so I don't see any justification for paying so much more for this mixed bag set of Fortes; and certainly I could NEVER afford them. Oh AND I did buy a set of 3 mm tips and a 50 inch cable to do TAAT socks. (Yes, I like all that extra cable, and it's great for magic loop hats, or wide blankets as well.)

yet another excellent review! My pet peeve with needle sets like these is: why do I get 3mm, 3.25mm, 3.5mm, 3.75mm and 4mm sets (overkill!), but we're skipping from 6.5mm all the way to 8mm 😆 if there's such a big difference between 0.25 sizes, then why do they always skip through the 7mm sizes? Would you happen to know why this seems to be an uncommon size to find? Even for crochet I've found it not super easy to come across 7mm crochet hooks
@NimbleNeedles

well, because of percentage and yarns, i guess. The difference between 6.5 and 8 is 18,7%. the difference between 3 and 3,5 is 14% Also, there's a lot more yarn variation in the fingering weight/dk spectrum and a lot less when it comes to chunkier bases.

I hope the tips in this set are not soo sharp. Anyway, any needles you have to try by yourself. My set should come tomorrow and I will try. Different hand sizes, knitting styles and tensions will always result in different subjective experiences when using knitting needles. I did own a pair of Lantern Moon needles, but I found the lettering on the wood disappeared quite quickly, so I had to use a needle gauge to ensure I had the right tips. The tips did wear down while I used them, and the wood at the tip dented - the tips themselves didn't break, splinter or crack, but the shaft itself didn't hold its shape as I would have linked. I also found that my yarn was consistently catching on the joins, and on the swivel to metal transition on the cables. I ended up replacing them with a ChiaoGoo bamboo set, which I've been pleased with since. Whatever needles you end up using, happy knitting!

So I purchased this set when it was first released because it was so beautiful. I clearly did not need it because I already owned the Chiaogoo complete sets in bamboo and stainless as well as the Seeknit sets. Not trying to excuse Chiaogoo for the manufacturing issues, but at least I can replace them if anything happens to them. I got to try to Forte cords before the set was released so I knew what to expect - I had a cord break on my and that was promptly replaced. Perhaps the set was a waste of money, but I like them.

First, THANK YOU for such an in depth review!!! The price is ridiculous but I also think that Furls prices are just as ridiculous for their hooks. Buying a complete set of hooks depending on which ones you buy can easily run you the same amount of money if not more and that's JUST hooks. I would never buy a Furls because that tapered, long neck would make me crazy. I love in-line hooks. At least with this set you have a case and accessories as well. When this set first came out, I was intrigued. I might've actually splurged on them as I love ChiaoGoo and want all their stuff but they sold out (didn't know they actually stopped production) before I could seriously consider buying. After a few reviews, I decided that if anything, I'd only buy the swivel cords (since they can be used with all their needles) as the normal interchangeable sets were fine. You can never have enough cords in various sizes and I didn't NEED fancy wood or carbon. With this set, I do love that you can read the sizing on the needles way better, something I hope becomes standard with their other needles. I already wear glasses because I can't read tiny words and the struggle is real for the normal needles as the etching is very faint. I agree on the different size cable connections. It is odd that they ends aren't the same for the small and the large when you're paying that much for the set or either of their regular interchangeable sets. Of course the minis need smaller connections. I'm very happy that you compared other needle brands as well. You now have me rethinking buying their swivel cords because the Lantern Moon cords definitely function better. Even though these are your personal impressions, they are still extremely insightful and probably speak to what we're all thinking on some level. If you're going to pay that much, the company HAS to do better. Unless I find a set in a yard sale or thrift store, I'll be sticking with their normal sets.
@NimbleNeedles

yes, I agree...the sizing on their normal tips needs to be enhanced. I never really understood that. THeir target audience is mostly older woman. These need to be big bold black fonts and not some whimsical grey thin line you see if you hold it against the light at a certain angle :P

They need to stop over charging for something that has not even half its worth. (but this is my personal experience with this company)

I'd be inclined to agree. THeir dpns are not the best on the market at all, tho most people love them because of their red twist cables. While your personal preferences are entirely valid, I do think we have to be fair here. I think ChiaoGoo produces fine quality needles and they care for fine details other companies don't care about (specifically the joins and cables) and these last 5% will cost quite a bit more in production. That being said, some knitters might benefit more from that than others. And some simply don't care either way (or it's out of their budget!)

I do love your review videos. So detailed and fair. Thank you for that. I don’t have this new set, but I do have 1.0 and they totally sucked. They did send me a bunch of new cords, a new size 4 to replace the broken one- which came broken- and a new tape measure- after I sent them a scathing email- but these needles were NOT worth the price. Mine were also scratched and scored. The joins - so catchy. Quite frankly, CG knew these needles sucked, they should allow us to send back the 1.0 for replacement with the 2.0, but based on your review, this set doesn’t sound any better. The case is the best part of it. The rest was junk. I say this as a lover of regular Chiaogoo. I knit Continental, like Norman. But I do not hold my left forefinger far as Norman does, but I hold it right on the left needle. I hold my fingers on both hands very close to the tips. I further each stich by hitting my ring forefinger to the tip of the left needle, especially when doing purl stitches. That is the fastest way for me. I control the yarn taughtness by lacing the yarn over left forefinger, then under middle finger, over ring finger, and under little finger. Most of the time, depending on the thickness of yarn, I keep the thin yarns close to the area where the fingers are attached to the hand. Since I advance every stich by that right finger hitting left needle tip, I do not like very sharp points or after a few hours the fingertip is hurting I used to knit very fast, to a point that I knitted more stitches in 1 minute than the Dutch? woman who was the fastest knitter in Guinness Book of records some years back. I learnt to knit in Finland at age 4.5 years old. Now I am pushing 69 y/o. I do not knit socks here in Houston, Texas. It is useless. At first, who needs woolen socks here. The second is, NOBODY handwashes ANYTHING in the USA. So to knit socks in here does not happen. 😊 My good luck, since I hate the magic loop knitting. It takes more time and easily stretches the stiches any time a new looping is needed. I have still in here 2 pairs of wool socks I have knitted in Finland around age 13. My mother or sister had sent them along some of my childhood stuff as memories when my children visited Finland some 30 years ago frequently. Never have used them here, not even during Colorado trips. I have seen some newer? knitters complain about Boye needles snacking on the connection point. I had that happen a couple of times. I have used multi sided nail file that has very fine sanding, or regular sanding paper intended for metal. It smooths that connection point perfectly. I have several sets of multi size circular needles. If a Boye or similar sets have sticking problem, I do not hesitate to file snacking si❤ points with sandpaper when the cost is nearly $400. That needle set is a highway robbery. If one feels special and knits be best thin albaca wool items for Kardashians, they might like to add to the item a mention how much the needles cost.😂😂😂 To me knitting is a hobby, pleasure, not to make income. Seeing how these "specialty" needles have Norman mentioned imperfections, I say NO, HELL NO, nobody takes me to the cleaners with those! Thanks Norman for the review! I am a big ChiaoGoo "regular set" interchangeable needle fan and initially this set piqued my interest last year when I heard about waiting lists to order them. Now that I've seen your review, I have some thoughts that are going to prevent me from being interested in buying them! Positive qualities of this set for me include larger printed (engraved?) needle sizes on the needles. I cannot read some sizes especially on the smaller ChiaoGoos without a magnifying glass and bright light. I like the look of the case with the heavy duty zipper because my cloth case is starting to wear out. I need more storage room in the case for cables as I have many long and short Twist cables in large and small sizes for my current set and it's difficult to store them. Negative qualities IMHO: I like very sharp needle points and the new set doesn't have them. The price is outrageous! There is too much extra unneeded stuff included in the set. I have all of those accessories already in my knitting bag. I do not like the carbon or wood black color. When I knit with dark colored yarns, it is difficult enough for me to see the stitches. I don't know how I'd use these dark needles. My preference is to use silver metal needles. I have sets of colored wooden and bamboo needles that I don't use much because of my metal and sharp point preference. Overall, the price and quality issues turn me off to the idea of purchasing this set. Disappointed!

i mean, the color does work well for lighter yarns where steel can be a problem. And wood, of course, speaks to people with arthrithis, etc who enjoy a bit of extra warmth. Still...i am not sure these needles work for a lot of people in their current configuration. and btw...word...those needle sizes would need to be even bigger. Knitter's Pride does it quite well with their newest sets (mindful + lantern moon). both great bold fonts in a high contrast color

in Canada is even more.. and I was like how the heck can I afford or even justify almost $600 CDN. ya I am so happy I saw your review.. Honestly just seeing the price was enough for me to say NOPE NADA ZIP. but after watching your review and agreeing with what you have said. It's even a larger HELL NO..

Thanks for the detailed review! I love my ChiaoGoo stainless steel set, so I was interested to see what these looked like. While I LOVE the leather case and all the pockets and accessories, I do not love the slight gaps and defects you pointed out. The reason I splurged on my ChiaoGoo spin set was because I absolutely hate when my yarn snags on the needles. The spin set has SUCH a smooth join, and I am ROUGH on my needles. (I'm a tight knitter, and I've learned to embrace it, no changing me now! LOL) I've had my current set for a few years now, and the join is STILL so smooth. (Let's just say that my Knit Picks set did not last very long; the screw part became misaligned with a noticeable overbite that snagged every stitch. Drove me crazy!) So, while I love that case, I'm going to stick with my spin set. Maybe I'll just indulge in some more cables. I need more for all my WIPs! LOL Thanks again!

That was great Norman, thank yoyu. Personally I wouldn't spend the money. My current set of Chiaogoos will do fine, using the Swiv cables. Even so, I find the occasional odd snaggy join between the cable and the base of the cable. What I really wouldn't like about these is the needle length. My hands are small, and I prefer a needle that's about 3.5" long, a max of 4" with the cable base attached. Otherwise the extra needle length will hurt my hands.

Thank you for your Review. I found these needles priced way too high. Their swivel cables tend to catch on my knitting and make knitting that much harder. Like you I appreciate the lace tips , but maybe they would fit my husband’s knitting style. But not for me. So NO - I will not spend 4500 N kr on this set. 😮
