The Director saw that conditions were right in River Forest; he called from West Lagunita/Crothers and told me to run his experiment on our much cooler front porch. Observations: Had no commercial solution in the house, and I recalled recipes using an organic thickener such as corn syrup or glycerin. I substituted a Mary Poppins measure of carbohydrate in some dilute dishwashing liquid. Ambient temperature of minus 10 F., a very light breeze, enough to scuttle my first setup of trying to blow bubbles from and shoot video through an open screen door window. Bubbles were pushed back past the focus zone, and drops of exploded solution ended up on my lips. Second setup was completely out on the porch, yielding a good bubble in the field of view every thirty seconds. Next time I'll use less water and I'll keep the solution in a heated vessel because the soapy stuff is less likely to form a membrane on the wire loop as it cools to the outside temperature. I had no success catching a bubble on the wire loop without breaking it, I suppose due to the brittleness of the chilled sphere. Most of the airborne bursts resulted in a bunch of droplets or a wad like a crumbled bit of cellophane. After the video capture I got stills of bubbles that broke on the snow and left remnants of bubble stuff. Next time I'll have a couple of assistants follow bubbles with their cameras.
