Gooden was so dominant in the mid 1980s. Fun watching him

Thank you for posting this video. I have been looking for it forever. I even scoured the shelves of ESPN's library for it on a daily basis during my summer internship there, circa 1993. Such an awesome game. Gooden's no-hitter (that squibber was fielder's indifference at best), national telecast w/Scully and Garagiolia in the booth, cool late-summer NY weather, Foster going yard, Mets finally in a pennant race. Still so sad I could not see it live, as we had a family affair that night. I'll never forget pulling up to the Huntington Town House and my uncle rolling down his window at the valet stand to give me the score. At least I was in my (rented) tux. Thx again!

Fielder's indifference? What the heck is that? Nope! Infield hit! No... no-hitter!

Cool extra footage at the end! Johnny Ray was my favorite Pirate when I was a kid in the 80's.

I remember watching this game with my Father it was a Friday night he picked me up on the weekend..the Division was pretty much gone but it was so much fun to watch the Mets get a little payback against the Cubs..too bad no wild card in these days

Not to knock Johan Santana as a pitcher or a person, but this Gooden one-hitter is more of a no-hitter than Santana's no-hitter ever will be! Gooden was dominant in every sense, all night, against a very potent Cub lineup; and of course, good old Ray Knight clearly should have made a play on that slow bouncer in the 5th inning that ended up being the only hit for the Cubs. Johan's no-hit performance in 2012 was not dominant (he got some breaks on calls and catches). Ironically, Gooden's only career no-hitter, while pitching for the Yankees late in his career, was similarly aided by breaks and calls.

I agree with one exception to your comment: this was a good Cub line-up that was loaded with righties. Gooden killed righties in 1984 and 1985 especially. Also, I agree with you about the 1 hitter. As a Cub fan, exact same thing happened to Kerry Wood in his 20 strikeout game. Could easily have been a Perfect Game except for a play that shoud have been made at 3rd base.

This is the game I mention every time someone brings up how Santana got a break.

I was at this game, and Gooden was dominant! It was electric. One of the best pitched games I ever saw in person. Ironically, I was also at his 1996 No-Hitter against the Mariners in Yankee Stadium. Gerald Williams made a spectacular catch against Alex Rodriguez in the 1st inning. Otherwise, Gooden walked about 7 and was just good enough. Need a bit of luck and he had it that night.

Dwight Gooden was my favorite pitcher from the 80's. Its a shame drugs and injuries derailed of what would have been a sure lock HOF career.

The cubs and the tigers would have been a better world series.

They don't use spray anymore. The player has to just walk off the pain, which is dumb.
