I went to the Chicago stadium in the late 70’s for a concert. Too cheap to pay for parking I found a spot between two buildings where a house no longer stood. Little dude comes out and said for $10 he’d watch my hubcaps to make sure they didn’t get stolen. I said “What’s my guarantee they’ll still be here if I give you the $10? He smiled and said “ I guarantee they won’t be if you don’t give me the $10!” I gave him the cash and when I got back my hubcaps were still on the car. A man of his word.

@SirAnthony z It was just a thought, not a wish. I'm just echoing a comment from the 'Detroit East Side Danger Zone' video from a mail carrier who wrote that "the neighborhood was dangerous when it was full of houses", and that the many of the people who remain have paid off their homes, so they have more investment in the community (as opposed to the many rental properties seen in this video). Mo' people, mo' problems. I'd rather reside in a bombed out zombie neighborhood where there's ten people per city block vs 100+, where there's crowds of people wild'n out on the street corners all day and all night. I hear you about the deep poverty though. Resources are probably scarce when an entire city like Detroit is in a state of disrepair.

In the Marine Corps I knew a Marine who lived in this area. He was in our platoon during operation urgent fury. To describe him he was bad news but in Grenada he obeyed and had courage. Last times I saw him was in 2001 in DC during a military/friendship reunion and later that same year I met him while he was visiting Boston. He scored some big money and when his mother and sister found out about it they blackmailed him forcing him to buy them a home and marry his sister. He got a phony preacher to marry them and behind his mother and sister's back he secretly sold the house to someone. His mother next was getting angry because he was not making any money and the story was one day as he was leaving the house his mother hollered to him saying "Bring home the bacon!" meaning money. Later when he came back home he gave his mother a pound of bacon and she got mad and shot him dead. After he and his mother were taken away neighbors heard the sister singing. When they went inside the house to comfort her they saw her on the floor washing away the blood. "The house is all mine" more or less she said to them and she was smiling. Some months later the owner of the house came by and started hollering at her for not paying the rent. She got evicted later.

I grew up in the 60's along different places on Roosevelt Av. It was never a great hood but there was lots of civic pride, schools were still good, and more jobs. Now it looks depressing as hell and it doesn't take a genius to figure out why. 'There's no more factory/assembly lines/manufacturing or other entry level/laborer jobs for a young man/women to do. Back in the day we supported our families on one of those factory paychecks. We got overtime pay and we saved up for cars, houses, and raised our kids to be good kids and sought/fought to get them into good schools. Bottom line is jobs. Nothing changes a young man's mindset like a steady paycheck.

Lived there. Loved the beautiful buildings. I'm white. I played guitar w/ black folks in the hood. They had to say I was " Ok" to their friends to be " bodyguards" and keep me safe, and to keep my car not messed up. One thing: .... there was no trash on the streets back then. People had SOME respect for where they lived; even if they didn't like "Whitey" much. I built aguitar for a guy wh played w/ Aretha. We are close friends. I have black friends who have superior intellect, and vision, above lots of my white "cohorts". I have sadness that my visionary black friends in Chicago have to live in such a negative evironment. I hope, someday, that folks will get COMMUNITY there.

Do not EVER EVER EVER allow your life to end up trapped in a big city like Chicago or any city in the Midwest where it gets ultra cold. I’ve lived here 52 years on all sides of this city and I’am going to save your LIFE. Do not come here, imagine 99 ants in a Nike shoe box and then they drop you in, you’re crashing into everyone with no room to spare. Living in Chicago or a big city like this is one of the most toxic things you can do to your life, these videos aren’t telling you the truth, many are paid to be here because Chicago lost residents due to over taxation, corruption from politicians, ultra, ultra violence from gangs and bad schools, the list goes on and on. You never ever want to move into this city, it’s over saturated with ppl living on top of each other, behind each other, every direction you go there’s 10 thousand ppl coming at you, there’s no room to breathe, the drivers are road rageful and wreckless and all you see are accidents everywhere. Chicago is a very very dangerous and TOXIC ENVIRONMENT, don’t come here or bring your family here. Don’t get me wrong, there are beautiful ppl here but they are outnumbered by assholes and murderers. They have red light cameras everywhere to make money off the citizens because the politicians steal monies and the budget isn’t enough. My granny died here at 102, I learned from her this city has always been violent n corrupted and will always be. As a Blackman I’ve been all over this country and to foreign countries, no place is this bad. I love all humans regardless of race or gender. If you just have to come to Illinois (which I hope u don’t) pleaseeeee avoid any interactions with the City of Chicago, move to a far off suburban area for the safety of u and you’re family. The best thing I ever did in life was leave here, the worst thing I ever did was come back.

Imagine being a thin, 5'1 Latina girl walking through a neighborhood like that 💀 I had just moved to Chicago. I knew which area to not go to. But I didn’t know there were similar neighborhoods. I was headed somewhere and I saw that it was an hr walk. I wanted to take a walk. So I did. But neighborhoods change from like one block to another. I ended up in a really bad neighborhood. Almost everyone stared at me. Because I was dressed cute, lace, very feminine and dainty...So I walked with confidence and aware of my surroundings. Like I live there. No one bothered me. Needless to say I took a different way home.

The scariest place in Chicago, I received a call about a special needs child being abused. I am trying to remember the East / West St. I do remember going West and I had to turn North on Maypole. There was a saying at the station, on Maypole even the Nuns and Priest carry guns, I got to the Apartment, mom pulled in behind me, she had gotten a call as well. We went into her home and the babysitter , was abusing the child. I got the child to a hospital, along with mom, and I put the babysitter in jail. The irony, for having a such violent past / history/reputation, the people were so nice, friendly, and helpful.especially towards me, being in a mixed race Native American / Caucassian .

I definitely understand but the ‘poor and pregnant’ epidemic is getting out of control in urban cities across America. I watched these videos for some time now (which I find strangely relaxing, considering the environment). One thing I notice is that these 'extremely dangerous neighbourhoods' , seem most of the time quite, well,.not extremely aggressive. Is this because of seeing too many Deathwish movies (probably) with the idea of entering a graffity laden cityblock being instant suicide? or were the 70,80,90s actually so bad here that the violence 'self imploded'. It's a naive question of course, but still curious.

Like the wild, it's entirely different at night. In my experience ..crowds of strung out, hostile people encompassing your car as you approach a stop sign, others running different directions, shots popping at random. Human screams, lots of yelling, music, yellow eyes, explicit scenes all around...certain blocks/neighborhoods are horrific. The actual downtown is commercilized though...stereotypical...not nearly as bad as the hood. We should hope this person does not cruise around after dark. Safety first.

Growing up in a tough neighborhood is never easy for some who can’t handle it while others have develop a vast network of skills, have connections with people to survive through the rough times. It’s a shame that no one has step forward in the city of Chicago to clean up the streets of crime constantly happening to make the city safer for its citizens.
