Kirk Douglas and Michael Douglas presenting the Best Picture Oscar® for "Chicago" to Producer Marty Richards - the 75th Annual Academy Awards® in 2003.
Chicago was that rare musical that outbested the stage version. Totally earned it.

The reason why Chicago won the best picture is that it was describing how society was and still is. It's about getting away with murder, the corrupt justice system, and how the media affects it. Society is fascinated with criminals, and also another note is how women were having more power, how abused they were and as revenge, they killed their spouses/partners. The performances, the costumes, the music, the choreography. It's a gorgeous movie.

Chicago is such a spectacular film that slowly began the revival of the big screen musical! Awesome to see the father son act of Michael and Kirk Douglas present the award. I'm going to one day see Chicago on stage where the legacy began 4 decades ago. Happy 20th anniversary to the long running Broadway revival and good luck to Neil Meron & Craig Zaden for NBC's Hairspray Live this December and their big screen production of Pippin!

this is my own opinion. chicago was thought to be virtually un-filmable for decades. then with the ingenious concept of placing the musical numbers in a fantasy world inside roxie's head, this stage piece became a film. unlike all of the musicals that have won best picture especially my fair lady, chicago transformed in a film, a cinematic experience. that's why it was nominated and it's why it deserved to win.

" I don't think two people could have been happier than we have been", "Someone has to die in order that the rest of us should value life more" are just epic sentences that are stuck in my memory. Even ordinary quotes like "I'm gonna make a pie" or "I'll buy the flowers by myself" are unforguettable because they are full of emotion. The scenes, the music, the performances...it's pure perfection.

I don't get why many people regard Chicago one of the worst Best Picture films. It's not like it was unexpected like when Crash won. Chicago won the Directors Guild of America award and the actors were winning at the golden globes, SAG and BAFTAs. It's a sophistically made film. The cutting back-and-forth from reality to Roxie's musical fantasies is a classic example of editing. The songs are wonderfully integrated into the courtroom drama. Chicago deserved to win as much as the other nominees

In my opinion, this is one the best recent years in film according to the nominations and I think Chicago totally deserved that award. Of course, it isn't moving at all while The Pianist is, but still it is an entertaining movie with great performances and amazing music and it is just fun to watch. Yeah, The Pianist is an important movie and a very moving one, but I still prefer Chicago and also The Hours. And the performances of that year - Kidman, Zellweger, Moore (with TWO wonderful performances), Day-Lewis, Nicholson, Brody, Cooper, Harris, Zeta-Jones, Streep, Bates,... Really amazing.

Well, I think you're looking at the movies in terms of message, meaning and story and while the movies you mentioned seem to mean more as cultural pieces the award for Best Picture goes to the movie that had the highest achievement in film making which then ties in sound and cinematography and score and acting and all the technical aspects of the film. Chicago was the best at combining these things but also had a filming concept that successfully translated an "un-filmable" musical into a hit

However on this particular year there wasn't really much doubt that other movies were more deserving. The Two Towers would've been my choice followed closely by The Pianist.
