This is one of the most fantastic live performances I've ever seen. They are all amazing, led by Chick. I saw him live in about 1976, because some friends took me to see him at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago. I remember it being good, but I wasn't into jazz much at the time. Throughout the passing decades I've come to see how jazz is the music that's at the cutting edge, and this stuff just slaughters me now.

It's a 1980s Yamaha KX-5 MIDI controller. When I saw him on this tour the sounds were coming from his Yamaha Montage keyboard on stage, as there was a MIDI stuck note issue he fixed by walking over to the Montage and changed the patch and back to the original to clear the stuck notes. The KX sent the MIDI note ON command and something happened where the note OFF commands weren't transmitted/received so all the notes played were hanging on and on. Ah the joys of synths in a live situation.

Only Frank gambale can be surrounded by 4 of the 10 best jazz and sessions in the world and have them losing their minds like young children when he solos. He’s literally surrounded by genius talent and still steals the show in such a humble way. I also love how chick likes pranking the soloists with dissonant sub chords just to see if they go with and laughs while doing it. Only the fun bandleaders do that. The musicians know.✊🏾

Over-exaggerated praise to Frank Gambale.I really can't stand his annoying sweep-picking (read fake-picking).Go and find on youtube 24-years old Matteo Mancuso and discover a real threat to Frank.Matteo plays with such a brilliiant technique and in a way that Frank could only dream about.Even worse Frank would come out on an acoustic guitar in collision with greek maestro Michael Paouris.Matteo and Michael are the future of guitar.Anyway,Frank isn't capable of playing guitar on a level of good old Joe Pass.

It is insane how many years of musical experience you can find here on stage. These guys were already insane when I first listened to them in the 80ies and now after so many years it is an explosion of excellent composed music. None of these guys has to prove anything anymore in terms of technical aspects, they are already masters for ages but way more musical and groovy than they used to be in the early years.
