Scott is SO unbelievably musical.. I am so disappointed he isn't just dominating the covers of guitar player magazine. He is just outstanding. I should know, I am a pro session player from Nashville. And every time I hear him play he takes me on a musical journey. Not in technique, but in musicality. What a wonderfully gifted player he truly is.

It's a shame things didn't work out between Scott Henderson and Chick Corea. I'm a big fan of Gambale's work with the band, but I think Henderson was Chick's first choice, and you can see why, just from the outstanding solo here. There's a really natural and fluid feel to his technique.

I agree. And considering some of the big names who played with Chick before Scott and Frank, such as John McLaughlin and Bill Connors, just to name a couple. I do prefer Henderson over Gambale because Scott is much more soulful and melodic.

Agreed, Gamble never did it for me. I think I would have enjoyed this vs. of the band more if this was what we got to hear more. His style is def influenced by Holdsworth which is a good thing. Feels like there’s a little more heart here than just technical prowess. It looks like the band is having more fun too but that could be confirmation bias.

I guess Scott has opened up about his reasons for leaving the band. Someone posted the quote on the discussion board on Frank Gambale's website. He said that Chick pretty much kept his Scientology to himself, but Scott felt that his lifestyle at the time (with women) might conflict with Chick's values. He also didn't like being told to perform like a popstar, and being told how to act on stage. He said he was lucky to get the gig with Zawinul after he left Chick's band.
@bongofriendee

Zawinul had a bigger influence on Scott as well. You can tell by his compositions with Tribal Tech. Zawinul and his less-structured songs allowed Scott to express himself more freely.
@LRS905

I have read that comment board. What the post said was that after concerts and day activities, Corea liked to ask the guys what they had done during the day, during a tour in Japan. Patitucci said something like "I read the bible and spoke to my wife", Weckl something similar, and Henderson said "without missing a beat, I fucked the interpreter".
@nicholashnatyk4470

I'm not so sure Chick 'kept his Scientology to himself'. You saw plenty of references to L. Ron etc, on ALL of his LPs, for example. Find Henderson's own website & archives where he answers many submitted questions and it seems he was no fan of Chick's uptight control/leader politics off stage, & he essentially couldn't get out fast enough. As a band founder in his own right- Tribal Tech, Vital Tech Tones, etc.- he now sounds kinda mocking or contemptuous of his Chick/ Elektric 'experience.' BTW, Chick's estate is releasing a collection of Elektric albums & outtakes etc., and Henderson supposedly ISN'T EVEN MENTIONED! If so, then it speaks for itself, doesn't it?

I don't know if it's officially documented, but the belief is that Henderson left because of Corea's insistence that the band perform that robotic dance at the beginning of City Gate/Rumble. Henderson supposedly said that he's "not a dancer". There's also a rumor that Corea was pushing his Scientology beliefs onto the rest of the band. I guess it just wasn't an environment Scott was comfortable working in.

This Scott Henderson solo is imperfect but strangely definitive: mobilising his articulation with rapid repeat picking (1.50ish), a trademark, he gets straight into some canny note-choice superimposition on the two chord vamp (2.03, 2.14, 2.19)... Slightly messing up the ultra-hip D blues lick he put in on the studio cut (2.36), he comes out swinging like 'trane meets the eagles with diminished McCoy Tyner ideas (2.42 to 2.56) and ends with a killer resolution lick like Larry Carlton on channel-2 (3.00). After some note choice ideas and rambling shredding and accidental feedback (3.25) he restarts the solo with whammy detune and rapid picking (3.37) then attains a rare moment of stillness and perfection, like a young Carlos Santana in his bedroom on mushrooms, as his savage D-blues Buddy Guy meets 'bird field holler bend hits the perfect fifth spot and he gets the 'smell my socks' funk (3.40) setting him up for the hippest syncopated/repeated blues motif moves delivered with a slightly over processed but nicely singlng acid tone (3.41-3.45). After that it's downhill to Chicks rather boring major section with some random diminished licks but not before the other three effortlessly squeeze as much groove out of the arrangement with tight ensemble comping (3.53). I love this Hendo performance, if not his fashion choices, lol... peace and thanks for post * PS this wardrobe and Patitucci slap-fest outing is evidence that Duran Duran were hip to the NY fusion scene in 198whenever...

King Cockroach i always considered to be Scott Henderson's track as it really showcases his awesome guitar playing and really tears it up here during his solo. All due respect to Frank Gambale who did an excellent job in defining the band's signature sound but Scott was such a perfect fit for Chick's music and he matched up so well with bassist John Patitucci and drummer Dave Weckl, it's such a shame he never stayed longer as it would have been really cool to see what kind of role he would have played in the expanded version of the group. Outside of all his Tribal Tech and solo albums, i think his work with Chick Corea's Elektric Band was his best ever.
