Fun video to watch but I'm curious about something. You seem to know a lot about chicks so I'm curious if you ever use the vent checking version of sexing? To me, I would guess (but I'm totally noob to chickens so forgive my ignorance) that would be the most dependable way? Thank you so much for the video. Cute babies for sure!

Heather H I must have missed your comment, sorry for that! I tried vent sexing several years ago and learned quickly that I’m absolutely terrible at it, lol. Even if I look at Legbar chicks, which are autosexing, it all looks the same to me. I might give it another shot and see if I’m any better at it now!

Hi there, do you have any advice on sexing specifically around the 2 week mark? Breeds unknown and did not get to see them in first few days for feathering.

Scott Speers Sorry, somehow I missed getting notified about your comment! Unless you’ve got a fast developing male, you may not be able to tell them apart yet. For single combs, the front part of the comb may extend farther toward the front of the beak, ending over the nostrils, but not always. For pea combs, males may have three rows of even-sized peas. But I’ve seen females have this, too, on occasion, so it’s not a surefire tell. Sometimes you can use behavior as a clue, even at two weeks. Male tend to be more curious and brave. They are usually the ones that try to escape the brooder first, though I’ve had a few females with wanderlust, too

To be completely sure about sex at hatch, you need to have an autosexing breed or make an intentional sex-link cross (which includes feather sexing). Other than that, there’s the DNA option or vent-sexing, which is so difficult that even professionals employed by hatcheries get it wrong about 10% of the time. Some people will say you can tell by using metal on a string, holding the chick by the head, laying them on their backs, and other magic tricks, but the chances of getting it right are still 50-50, same as a blind guess. I wish there were an easy, specific, and sure fire way of looking at any random young chick and knowing its sex, but the truth is that there simply isn’t one. Like most things in life, a person has to research, gain experience, and be wrong a lot before they get better at it.

the one that runs right up to your finger I mark as a rooster. usually correct. some breeds show more obvious trait differences, such as the group of Leghorns I have now, but some breeds, not so much (assuming Purebred).

Toxic WaggleySleet 293 White on the wing isn’t sex-linked, so it could be either male or female.

Hi! The color/size of the comb is probably the biggest indicator right now. For a pure Cuckoo, the males should be lighter than the females due to the double dose of the sex-linked barring gene. If you want to send me a pic from my FB farm page, I could take a look. Facebook.com/WinterhorsesFarm
