Brilliant video. Im interested in keeping chickens in my garden. I live in Barking and Dagenham Borough. Foxes were my biggest worry. But after seeing the custom made coop, Im more confident about giving it a try.

I've kept chickens for almost 15 years and love it. The eggs taste far better than store bought ones, probably as the chickens are less stressed. I also give mine lots of veg. Be warned though, your chickens pooh a lot and they don't mind where they do it. It makes excellent compost though, added to other compostable things.

This isn’t a new thing. My parents kept chickens and rabbits for eggs and meat in the late 60s in East Ham, East London. I vividly remember coming home from school and seeing the carcasses hanging in the kitchen.

@@alal2192 Don't have a cockerel and do something about rats. Chickens aren't that noisy. Plus, unless you don't get on with your neighbours, or they're grumpy, if you give them some eggs now and then they'll appreciate them.

I have kids from a special school come and see my chickens, they love to see them. I always let them have a good, close look and help themselves to eggs and I explain as much as I can. All children seem to like to see chickens.

Trouble is they will ruin your garden, rats/mice will smell the food and be frequent visitors no matter how clean you keep it.
@Teeniebfable
2 жыл бұрын
That can be the case. But as long as you keep your coop and run clean and keep their food in sealed containers you’ll not have too many. Mind you I’ve got 6 cats as well as several chickens, so any rats or mice are coming into the wrong garden. Also chicken can and will kill and eat mice.

I'm really interested in keeping some domesticated ducks in the garden, but I'm thinking about some hens too. Fortunately our garden is quite long (1950s ex-council house) since we live in the suburbs but I am worried about the high frequency of foxes around, as well as neighbouring outdoor cats.

I kept ducks, they're funny things. They walk through something rather than around it. The eggs are bigger too. You will need to have a fair bit of water, they need to dunk their heads. I had a few buckets and a baby bath with water in and replaced them every day, they make it muddy quickly. Also, their webbed feet are sensitive so don't put them on a woodchip floor or anything abrasive. Building fencing is good to make a secure run. The larger area the better. I grow honeysuckle and clematis etc around mine to make it look prettier.

Easter Eggers are a mutt that lays shades of green/blue too. Have you heard the laughing crow of the South American chicken breed who sound like a laugh instead of a crow? They have laughing contests to judge best laugh/crow. I have my blue, green, and chocolate layers but want a laughing rooster, but my neighbors say no...and I live in the country. My mom thinks they sound like drunk people at a party.
