1 medium-sized cabbage
300g ground chicken (or finely chopped chicken breast)
1 small onion (finely chopped)
2 cloves garlic (minced)
1 small carrot (grated)
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
1 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp ginger (grated)
Salt and pepper to taste
1 egg (optional for binding)
2 tbsp cornstarch or flour (to help bind the filling)
Fresh herbs (like cilantro or parsley, optional)
Dipping sauce (soy sauce, chili sauce, or your choice)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Cabbage Leaves:
Boil water in a large pot.
Carefully peel off the cabbage leaves one by one, keeping them intact.
Blanch the cabbage leaves in the boiling water for about 2-3 minutes until they are soft enough to roll but still firm.
Remove and cool in cold water. Drain and pat dry with paper towels.
2. Make the Chicken Filling:
In a large bowl, mix the ground chicken, chopped onions, garlic, grated carrot, soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), sesame oil, ginger, salt, pepper, and herbs.
Add the egg and cornstarch (or flour) to help bind the mixture.
Mix everything thoroughly.
3. Assemble the Rolls:
Take one blanched cabbage leaf and place about 1-2 tablespoons of the chicken mixture in the center.
Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling and roll it up tightly, like a burrito.
Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
4. Steam the Rolls:
Place the rolls in a steamer, making sure they are not too tightly packed.
Steam for about 15-20 minutes, until the chicken is fully cooked through.
5. Serve:
Transfer the steamed cabbage rolls to a plate.
Serve with a dipping sauce of your choice, like soy sauce, vinegar, or chili sauce.
Tips:
You can add more vegetables, like mushrooms or bell peppers, to the filling.
For a spicier version, add some chili flakes or Sriracha to the chicken mixture.
