I can tell you from my 6 years in the Navy, the Navy takes fire and flood training very serious, we had drills all of the time, some planned and some surprise, so simulating the real thing. It also does not matter what your actual jobs is, everyone participates, everyone trains since you can't always get special crews into position on a ship. My guess is that is the ship had a full crew on when that started the outcome would have been a lot better.

Just as a point of info, the USS Bonhomme Richard was scheduled to go back in service to counter China's military aggression in the South China Sea. It's rather convenient that the ship went up in flames and it may be a total loss. Even worse, I get a sneaky feeling that the U.S. may be on the verge of WW3 with China.

A 21 year Naval career taught me two things - 1. fires happen in ships. 2. the length of time an admiral talks about one of them is in direct proportion to what he/she knows about them. 15 minutes = zero knowledge.

Just based on it taking so long to put out the fire, the fire suppression systems during maintenance were inadequate. Can't do much about the design of the existing Wasp class ships now, so either the maintenance procedures need to be drastically more limited to reduce the risk to the overall ship during maintenance, or else extra fire suppression systems need to be added during maintenance. My guess is that the high cost both for availability and actually carrying out the maintenance makes slowing down the maintenance a non-starter. So would guess the USA needs to invest in systems both dock side and internal to a ship while under maintenance to make damage control more robust. I hear in various KZitem videos that during maintenance, there are hoses, cables, etc running through isolation bulkheads, as well as supplies parked as needed, so that this fire doesn't reflect on actual risk to the ship got hit during combat. If that is true, then there should be techniques used during maintenance to reduce the fire risk in this situation, to lower it below that in combat. I've heard that both the Halon system and the foam system were tagged out because of maintenance.

An Admiral in some kind of camoflage is absurd. He should be in dress Blues. All sailors will fight fire to save their ship. It is the only thing keeping them out of the ocean. All honors to the men and women on the ship. FWIW - I was a River Rat on the Mekong five decades ago.

There was obviously a very serious mistake made by a ranking officer aboard this ship. One wonders how this fire got so bad; so fast! As a US Navy veteran trained in ship board fire fighting. It's clear that multiple things went very wrong aboard this ship. The damage is obviously so bad, the ship may have to be written off. In terms of future lessons: Just because a ship is in port, under going significant maintenance. Does not mean that damage control boundaries should ever be disabled for very long. So when a boundary is disabled; each is worked on in sequence. To mitigate risk to the ship, and it's crew. There is a lot of talk about "crew safety." So one also wonders if this translates into an attitude of: Run away, and let it burn? Finally just whom was in charge of operations; when the this fire was thought to be "out;" only to reflash with such devastating consequences?

@@kansasthunderman1 Nothing sneaky about open Chinese aggression in the Pacific! As a former crew member of USS Ranger CV-61. I know that ship board fires; take place with distressing frequency. What's unusual, is that this was not put out quickly by the ship board fire fighting team. The ship's crew seem to have abdicated all responsibility. So as to seek their own personal safety. So probably a critical failure in the chain of command is responsible. Most likely!
