Everyone talks about the afc being stacked w/ QB talent. And it is. But mahomes has been the constant. In 2018 it was mahomes alone in the afc as the top young talent. Some ppl tried to put DeShawn Watson in there as a peer competitor. Didn't happen. Then it was jard Goff over in the NFC that ppl were comparing. The next year it was lamar jackson. Josh allen started making some noise. Mahomes wins the superbowl and shuts the world up. 2020, lamar jackson, Allen, and justin Herbert comes on the scene. Jackson can't win in the playoffs, allen loses to mahomes again, and Herbert is stuck at home watching the playoffs. Mahomes plays in his 2nd superbowl. 2021, jackson falls off, Goff is gone, and it's allen and Herbert, and Burrow. Burrow upsets mahomes and the chiefs, but loses the superbowl. 2022 allen implodes midseason and continues to lose in the playoffs. Lamar jackson is MIA and yet to win a playoff game, Goff is in Detroit, and Burrow loses to mahomes in the AFCCG. Mahomes just made his 5th championship game in a row and is headed to his 3rd superbowl...in a rebuild year for the chiefs...Burrow might still yet prove himself over time. But Mahomes is the only constant we have in this league for the past 5 years. And it isn't even close

The disrespect to Montana. Brady or Montana was a serious debate up until 2 or so rings ago (Depends who you ask). Maybe one day he’ll pass Montana or Brees or Manning or Elway or Marino etc. but he’s not nearly there yet. We live in a such a ‘I want it now’ society. I have no doubt he’ll get there. But let’s not give him his flowers before he deserves it. Stats are inflated and the game is made to protect quarterbacks now. Quarterback is more valuable than it used to be. Marino never went back to a Super Bowl, people forget that. Nothing is guaranteed. He could never reach a Super Bowl after this year and that’s not crazy to say

Probably the best comment on here so far. The goalposts for GOAT or even top 5 have moved so much over the last 15 years by the media it’s disgusting. Initially, it was who catches Montana first: Brady or Manning. Then once the 28-3 comeback happened, Brady pretty much sealed the deal…then the short-lived Brady-Rodgers debate. Even if Mahomes wins 12 days from now, do people actually think he leapsfrog Manning who would be tied in rings, still have 3 more mvps, and someone who redefined the qb position at the line.

It's so hard to compare QBs of different eras but I have to admit I've never really understood the Elway love. I know he's been to 5 Super Bowls (and was awful in 3 of them okay in the other 2) and I know QB stats from the 80s can't be compared to today but even comparing him to the other guys in the 80s and 90s and he doesn't look very good. Lots of interceptions, not really a lot of touchdowns, , not a high completion percentage, decent running stats but nothing special. I must be missing something. He won an MVP in 87 and looking at the results and both Jerry Rice and Montana should have run laps around him. Maybe some of you can help me out with some extra context that I'm clearly missing.
@WadesWorldd
Жыл бұрын
You're also forgetting to mention the glaring facts that QBs were not protected back then. They would get their caps knocked off just like any other player. Defense back in those days were much better and more intense as they were allowed to do so much more. They could actually touch the player without a flag being called. Today's game is completely different. Today's game is an offensive league. Please go watch NFL films, and you will see what real football was and what it isn't today. Those guys were actual gladiators, and it was much harder to be a great QB back then.
@francescosmith7859

@@WadesWorldd I get that so I'm not comparing Elway's numbers to Mahomes or Manning but comparing Elway to Montana or Marino or Boomer Esiason or even Randall Cunningham and all of those guys look like they have much better numbers.
@777zippy777
Жыл бұрын
The thing with Elway is that he was saddled with the wrong head coach for his first decade in the NFL. Dan "3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust" Reeves had no clue how to design an offense to Elway's strengths. Elway's talent was wasted on Reeves. There's a reason why Bill Walsh wanted to trade Montana in early 1983 for the rights to draft Elway. That's not a typo either, you can look that fact up. Now imagine Elway on the 1983-89 49ers... holy shitballs..... that would've been INSANE. Also, Elway literally dragged the 1986, 1987 and 1989 Broncos to super bowls. Then he got stomped because the NFC in the '80s was a MONSTER. The '86 Giants were ridiculous (Parcells, Belichick, L.T. and that defense... forget about it). The '89 49ers were even MORE insane. Like every HOF QB, Elway just needed some help to win a SB or two. And he finally got it in the mid '90s.
@francescosmith7859

@@zeusonolympus123 Thank you. That makes sense. I know that was the strike year so numbers were lower but to also get the context of single handedly leading a team to the super bowl and the numbers are almost secondary at that point. Also the reminder of how big he was comparatively at that time also helps. Thanks again.
@broncosbest6441

Ask the defenders of the time who they feared the most. The other quarterbacks in the 80s such as Montana had a vastly superior team around them. Elway was the offence until the 90s continually making something with a whole lot less. That was one of the better rankings of quarterbacks I’ve seen for a while although I disagree somewhat with the peyton manning ranking he should be in the next tier down.
@kennethshaw626

I used to be a 49ers fan and I still consider Joe Montana was over rated. Look at the help he got. At wide reciever was Jerrry Rice . I would put him in one of the top 5 recievers of all time. Across from Rice was John Taylor probably one of the top 5 or 10 recievers in the game during the time he was playing . He could take a 5 yard pass and go 50 yards by breaking a tackle. That's not counting Brent Jones at tight end and Roger Craig at running back. One of the best reciever groups ever. B

Yes, Montana was blessed by having one of the great powerhouse teams in history, on both sides of the ball. But he also didn’t have Rice for his 1st two super bowls. Montana also had to go thru probably the stiffest competition in history during the 80s though : Redskins were incredible, The Giants defense led by LT & Belichick, and the mid 80s Bears.

Gotta calm down a bit. You can compare Mahomes and Brady to each other in years they both played, but it's really hard to compare QBs from different generations. Brady began in an era where a 1.5:1 TD/INT ratio and 3,000 passing yards was a solid year, whereas now that's not even a good year for a rookie. You especially can't make the argument that Mahomes is anywhere near Montana yet...if you are going to compare these guys, you first have to look at their peers. How much better was Montana than the other elite QBs at the times vs how much better is Mahomes vs his current peers (which he is clearly the best atm)...It's this prisoner of the moment mindset that has left guys like Dan Marino in the dust for best regular season QB. People seem to forget that he was putting up stats that nearly DOUBLED other starters numbers - that would be the equivalent to Mahomes throwing for 7,500 yrds and 65+ tds.

@Ray Donovn exactly. Tom Brady can manipulate his teams TOP by playing well and keeping the ball. And there’s not one offensive possession where he doesn’t touch the ball or make the decision of where to go with it. A basketball player is timed, 24 seconds. They can’t manipulate TOP. And the entire game other ppl will be making offensive decisions whether he runs point or not. They’ll decide to shoot, pass or dribble. And Bball players play maybe 38-40 mins a in the playoffs and using LeBron as an example his team normally gets outscored that entire time he’s sitting.

He won both regular season and superbowl MVP, was the third back ever to rush for over 2000 yards in a season, and had perhaps the best five seasons ever as a running back which is a far shorter prime position than QB.. He barely made the hall of Fame and was held out of the hall forever because they said five years wasn't long enough, missed out on the NFL top 100 list and he isn't considered a top 20 all time rb let alone five.
