Back in the 60s, Roald Dahl hosted a Twilight Zone type show called "Way Out" and spent much of his time teaching people how to kill their spouses. Then he assured us on at least a couple episodes that it's impossible to find a necessary ingredient to make the poison. 😎 Then he hosted Tales of the Unexpected a decade later but without the dark humor of Way Out. Ah well....

This is a great video! Thank you for sharing. I love the work of Roald Dahl, both as a kid and now sharing this with my daughter. We all have skeletons in our closet, Dahl was no different. This background does explain how some of his writings were especially mean and disrepectful to others. At times I questioned if his writings were a good influence for young children. But I do love Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and Witches. All forever classics!

It's interesting you say that - I've been rereading a lot of the ones (plus ones I haven't) lately and there are some really interesting moral lessons - for instance, I really believe that Chocolate Factory is a moral lesson in overindulgence and ironically enough, The BFG focuses on xenophobia (the antagonistic giants) and how it's bad for society. Yes of course he had some problematic views but if you take a critical look at any author from years ago, nearly all of them are probematic.

Very interesting video. For sure the numerous canings and punishments in his youth left him a hard person. Even though his first wife and children undoubtedly took the brunt of his PTSD there was still love enough for them to show up at his deathbed. Life is unrelenting and death is forever. A very fine writer and communicator. RIP Roald.

Both his parents were originally from Norway, not just his mother. Roald Dahl's novel "The Witches" also takes partly place in Norway.
@AnnaMaledonPictureBookAuthor

Both parents were from Norway but immigrated to the UK (Wales) and his little sister died first, and a few weeks later his father died of pneumonia. Very traumatic. And later his own 7-year-old daughter died, his infant son's pram had a collision with a taxi resulting in brain damage, later his wife had massive health issues... plus the war... I'm not excusing him for his questionable behaviours, but he really didn't have an easy personal life.

Health issues?A full blown stroke, and he spent every day teaching how to speak and walk and act again. A collision? The drunken taxi driver smashed into the baby's pram while it was being pushed along sidewalk by the nanny. Your choice of words is odd.

You should have talked more about his antisemitism. That one quote featured in the video did not really represents his entire view on this matter. He fought the Nazis in North Africa and as a British secret agent, he tried to get the U.S to join the fight against the Third Reich. He only became Anti Semitic after the Israelis treatment of Palestinians. If anything, he was actually pro Palestinian. The mistake that he made was that he grouped Zionists Israelis and non Israelis Jews into one group.
@ltisenotem
Жыл бұрын
But anti semitics give anti-Israel people a bad name. People who are anti-Israel and then become anti-semitic are a disgrace since Israel relies on calling all anti-Israel as anti-semitic. Whereas, many people who disagree with Israel are not Nazi sympathizing anti-semitics. Then there's you who sympathize with the sympathizers. All of it is a sponsorship to Israel

People don't seem to understand that others are not all or nothing. You don't have to agree with all of the person's beliefs when you enjoy their creations. No one is totally good or totally bad! I still like the tv show "Roseanne" and the book series "Harry Potter." Just because I enjoy the works does not mean I align with all of the creator's views. I think people forget that.

Surprised to hear this. Never knew Roald Dahl was misogynistic or rude to his family and even somewhat sympathized Hitler despite being a fighter pilot in WWII. I grew up liking his works, but I guess that comes from his accident in the plane crash. Here are my top 10 favorite Roald Dahl books ranked in order: 1. Esiotrot 2. The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me 3. Billy and the Minpins 4. The Enormous Crocodile 5. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator 6. Matilda 7. The Witches 8. The BFG 9. George’s Marvelous Medicine 10. James and the Giant Peach Of the film adaptations, I like Wes Anderson’s take on Fantastic Mr. Fox the best and George Clooney takes the cake for me.

Those are my favorite works of his as well. However, hearing he was misogynistic and possibly rude to his family is no surprise. He had a 11 year affair with a woman his wife introduced him to and was working with after she had literally experienced cerebral aneurysms while pregnant with their children. Then divorced her and married the side chick. 😂 Not something a great loving husband and father would really do.

A great man. The contemporary instinct to write off people of past generations as 'racist', 'misogynistic', or otherwise 'hateful' is tiresome and infantile. It is foolish to judge people of past times by contemporary standards - we are so weak and pampered now that the hardness of our ancestors lives is unimaginable.

ill always love his books though and short stories especially. dont care what has been "revealed" about him or what controversies he's involved in. too many deceased public figures have been getting judged or canceled these days and its not right because hes not alive to defend himself or explain his actions. he grew up in a different time and things that he believed or did were not considered all that controversial at the time, to much of history and historical figures are being written out of history or written in a negative light because of our perceived "enlightened" and ultra "morally superior" time in history, but we are standing on the shoulders of giants thinking we are flying high above them. the rewriting of his books with "inclusive" and "non offensive" language is so disrespectful and artistically immoral, its absurd and shows just how privileged and entitled our society is, to alter a dead mans work because we dont approve of the language he used or the beliefs he may of held, its such a bad precedent, to go in and alter or change something to fit our narrative or our belief of how something should be, its a blatant and outright push towards censorship and anyone who participates and actively encourages this kind of reform should be ashamed of themselves and should familiarize themselves with history and the dangers of controlled speech and forced regulated thought. oh and by the way, my favorite of his works is his "complete works of short stories" that the everymans library released. all of his short stories were good, if you never read them, i recommend that you do, as an adult now they are an amazing treat because they contain the charming and descriptive writing style that is attributed to dahl in his childrens novels just with much more underlying adult themes and humor, as well as interesting and eccentric characters possessing odd or bizarre facets of knowledge that is passed on to you in the story.
