I have a large chimney, have checked the attic where the chimney is visible , is all brick. built in 1965. I had a water heater installed in 2019, flue is connected to the flue furnace in attic going into the chimney. Had some problems with the steel burner in water heater which was completely covered with sediment and there were huge explosions. Could the sediment have come from chimney? I have been watching your videos even though I am 80 years old and my do it yourself projects are behind me, I still enjoy them. Must be the Dane in me. Oh, I noticed the chimney has 2 flues on top??? Also, got a new furnace in the other half of attic that has its separate metal flue going thru the roof, no chimney.

Hi Yana, I couldn't say unless I seen it, but with today's furnaces and water heaters everything has gone to metal chimneys, and most masonry chimneys get lined with metal inserts, mostly because of the moisture problems, a good plumber can tell you better, thanks Mike

If there is double flues in one chimney fireplace on main floor and ceramic hole on second floor the sand is all the way up the flue to the hole what is the reason?

Жыл бұрын
Hi Playgirl, I couldn't say unless I was there to see it but I don't know why anybody would be putting sand in side a chimney, thanks mike
@atkgrl
Жыл бұрын
@@MikeHaduck so I’ve been asking around some say because all the sand next to the other chimney flu helps to heat the structure of the house and another says you do not want fumes to go down to the first floor and so they fill it up to the hole with sand to protect the house and let the smoke head up. It’s a black course sand. Three fireplace sharing to flues in one chimney 2 main floor share one and the second floor the other. How do the chimneys in PENN heat the second or third floor. This is a Gigantic house over 5000 sq ft with many rooms and 5 chimneys 4 brick one a metal contraption which was attached to the oil burning stove I pulled out which took up a whole room. Anyway looking to open the fireplaces or move the ceramic holes to a higher place on the chimney or make u shaped pipes to attach to the stove to bring the exhaust down to the 24 inches. Worried about cutting a hole higher up in the chimney into the other second floor flue part or if it’s even necessary. I try to trust they did the right thing for the time but now I need heat.

@@MikeHaduck When there is no insulation in an unused Chimney the temperature difference between the exposed chimney and the unexposed chimney creates a cycle of circulation and moisture build up.
