The arm triangle choke in BJJ can be an effective choke. But at times it can be hard to finish. Whether because your partner starts to defend or you get a little to excited and don't secure all the grips properly.
This is the problem our buddy Mike is having with his arm triangle chokes. He can catch them, but he can't seem to finish them.
In this video I show the grips I use to finish the arm triangle choke as well as showing the common mistakes I see people make when trying to finish their arm triangles in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The 1st mistake I see people make is their shoulder placement. This one is really common amongst my newer BJJ students. They will get excited about the finish but them miss some of the little body placements needed for the correct finish. In turn, when they go to finish the arm triangle it turns into more of a neck crank or squeeze rather than a choke. Proper shoulder placement will ensure that your arm triangle choke is an actual choke rather than a crank.
2. Most people who have trained Brazilian Jiu-jitsu have some defense to the arm triangle. A common counter is when someone starts pushing their elbow out to make space.
Often people don't have a good counter to this movement. This is where the "chin in the eye" counter comes in. This has been an effective counter I've used in my own Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training and competition for years. When someone tries to push out against the arm triangle choke. Their push out is countered with your push in. And while you're not actually putting your chin in their eye. It's a good queue to use when explaining the movement.
There are some other details nestled into this video. So if you're having trouble finishing your arm triangle choke during your BJJ training or competitions. I hope this video is helpful to you!
Thanks!
