I am the rare animal that likes both the producers contributions to the finished album. Enjoy the bombastic version of all my prayers That made the album cut but I also like Walters .

No wonder why China Crisis put an end to their relationship with their former record label... to put it in Orson Welles words, they “edited” what was to be their masterpiece “with a landmower...”

It must be frustrating to have had major success slip through your fingers like that. They had some great hits, you're right that this was the one!

Absolutely beautiful, just about my favourite song from the group, easily the best version

I bought the album in 1989 on its release and thought it was excellent. I still do. I was disappointed it did not do much better in the charts and it remains a lost classic of the eighties. The album version of All My Prayers always sounded too cluttered and bombastic (someone else mentions this word below) to me although it was hard to pinpoint exactly why. But this version is much better in my opinion and in keeping with the sound of some of the tracks on Flaunt The Imperfection, also produced by Walter Becker, of course. This version would still have needed a remix for a single release ( I cannot remember if the album version was released as a single) to make it a hit as while it is a great song, four years after the hits from Flaunt CC were not exactly flavour of the month and so would need something eye catching to compete in the charts of 1989.

@@eightiesmusic1984 I disagree that this version needs a remix to do well, as is sheer perfection, and the musical arrangement perfect unlike the topic version which is a mess

Ahhhh listen to that bass. This version is more mature sounding and innovative, especially the second half with the guitar solo

I always thought the Mike Thorn versions of St. Saviours Square, Red Letter Day, and All My Prayers stood out from all the rest of the tracks like a sore thumb and didn't fit. Not to mention recorded at a completely different level. The Walter Becker versions in my mind are far superior.

Fascinating and thanks for posting all three. First time I've heard them. I'd vote yes to Walter's version of this and 'Red Letter Day', but no to 'St Saviour'...

Are you kidding??? Walter’s version of St Saviour is incredible! They’re amazing these versions, I don’t know why the album mixes are swimming in long reverb. So many nuances are lost in the muddy verb

@@lordgabriel1042 100% agree - St Savior is completely overproduced; an engineer who doesn't trust the quality of the songwriting and the musicianship and drenches everything in studio trickery. The Becker version is sublime, going back to what made Flaunt the Imperfection so great. The bass and the drums are so crisp here - the whole sound is pristine and timeless whereas the released version sounds incredibly dated.

@@lordgabriel1042 Agree, but Thorne's 'St Saviour' has good impact as an album-opener. Love these Walter versions though, in a 'Katy Lied' style.

As someone totally in love with the version eventually put on the album, this is just....... less impressive.
