Free trade of the opium we were growing in India so we could destroy the Chinese civilization because we were the biggest drug dealer the world has ever known. Why were we growing opium in India? Because we needed the Indians to raise some money somehow to buy the textiles. Why were they buying the textiles? Because we destroyed their textile industry because we had textiles to sell them that we were making in Manchester. Why were we making them in Manchester? Because we shipped people from Africa - because we encouraged slavery more than ever a country - over to the Americas so that they could pick cotton so it could be shipped back to Manchester so it could be woven and sold in India so that the drugs could be sent to China.

The fact is all British colonies were given self-rule around the 50s and 60s, with the lone exception of HK. Why was HK an exception? The reason for that is that part of HK was under a lease, and China, even as early as the 50s, had threatened to invade HK should Britian introduce real democracy in HK (source: see New York Times article "Hong Kong Democracy Standoff, Circa 1960"). At least in the post WW2 context, the main reason for HK's lack of democracy is China, not Britiain.

Even if China is a policed state, a majority of their people have big improvement to their lives. Unlike the British, Western countries and USA in NATO are always involve in war with other countries, China is on a peaceful path. For them countries are deemed a threat by the following. 1. Country has nuclear power 2. Country has economical power 3. Country that they do not have a crony of their own in power, are deemed unfriendly towards them. (Their efforts in stoking trouble have failed miserably)

Do the people who “have big improvement to their lives….” Include minorities like the Uyghurs and Tibetans for example?

Only a very small part of people who improved can't represent everyone in China. The poor people are voiceless.

Hong Kong never had any demorcratic freedom under British colonial rule. Chris Patten himself was appointed (not elected) by the British Govt to become the Governor of Hong Kong. The Hong Kong National Security Law was written into the Basic Law (Article 23) as part of the handover in 1997, which China did not enact until 2020 in order to curb the violent protests in 2019.

Liao Chengzhi, a senior Chinese official in charge of Hong Kong affairs, said in 1960 that China "shall not hesitate to take positive action to have Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories liberated" [by the People's Liberation Army] should the status quo (i.e. colonial administration) be changed. The warning killed any democratic development for the next three decades

No most countries unlike China aren’t a dystopian surveillance state subverting it’s people that read 1984 as an instruction manual on how to build a nation including genocide of prisoners of conscience such as Uyghurs, Tibetans, Falun Gong practitioners, House Christians and more in forced labour indoctrination concentrations camps with added organ harvesting on mass.

The rest of China is literally the same sold out to foreign investment, the CCP are just fascists now not communists, at least Hong Kong had a kind of Ireland kind prosperity which is such China coveted dearly as for why they didn’t wait the agreement out proper.
