Something interesting; Deng Xiaoping and Chiang Ching-Kuo were classmates back in Moscow. Those two were the only two people who would be able to negotiate a peaceful reunification of the two Chinas. On the day Chiang Ching-Kuo died a lot of KMT officials cried because they knew they would be stuck on Taiwan and never see unification for the rest of their lives.

A good informative video. However, do remember you're recording for a video, not speaking at a live lecture. Occasionally stuttering in the middle of a long speech is usually understandable when you are speaking in front of a live audience. But this is supposed to be a recorded video, and it can admittedly get quite irritating when you constantly pause and stutter in the middle of a sentence. Please do learn to relax and take as much time as possible to record as many takes as you like, and record each segment separately instead of recording the whole thing in one take. You can then edit and mash the best takes of the various segments for a more smoother viewing experience.

One country two systems policy was originally designed for Taiwan issue, and was using as experiment in Hongkong and Macao. The policy is designed with a lot differences, in Taiwan KMT can keep almost anything even include military except diplomacy, but the this policy for Hongkong and Macao with a lot less autonomy by comparison. Also CCP just started opening policy, they had promise to give Guangdong and Fijian province to KMT and let them try their system. If it works CCP will give another province Jiangxi to KMT.

One key reason why One Country, Two Systems is a sham: the model was never meant to be permanent. Something many people forget is that both Hong Kong and Macao will lose their SAR status 50 years after the handover; considering the SAR status was created specifically to implement the One Country, Two Systems model, losing the SAR also means losing Deng's model. The reality is One Country, Two Systems was designed from the beginning to be a 'peaceful' annexation of what the CCP considers "lost" territories. Heck, you can see Xi Jinping is already getting impatient and is accelerating the erosion of the second system in Hong Kong today. Chiang Ching-kuo may have been smarter than we realize, because he knew this would happen if Taiwan accepted Deng's proposal.

It seems like the KMT now in 2020 is a shell of it’s former self. I’m no expert in Taiwanese politics but it seems like the ruling party now is much more in line with the KMT message during the early years of the KMT in Taiwan (The 3 Noes)Is the current KMT still not for reunifying or are they much more lenient to that idea?
@Nathan-jh1ho

Yes, the KMT seems to be too warm to PRC now, agreeing with too many of their promises. Not that making trade relationship and maintaining peace is a bad thing. In 1950 U.S. Pres. Harry S. Truman sent the U.S. Seventh Fleet to the Taiwan Strait to prevent an invasion of the island by communist armies from the mainland. The United States decided to send the U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet to protect Taiwan from a Communist Chinese invasion and also to prevent the Nationalist government in Taiwan from continuing its attacks on the mainland. This act, introducing the Seventh Fleet into the Chinese theater, is considered the beginning of the U.S. policy to defend Taiwan from China. Since 1950, this commitment to defend Taiwan has been the largest potential cause of a U.S.-China war. Because the U.S. is a superpower and China is rising in strength, the Taiwan flashpoint is now considered to affect not only the U.S.'s national security but the world's international security as well. This policy, originating with the movement of the U.S. fleet in June 1950, has had significant security ramifications for over six decades. Source: The Seventh Fleet Standoff by Eric P. Swanson

the real factor behind for reunification of Taiwan has always been the economy, not politics. back then, before the 1990s, China was too far behind economically compared to Taiwan, therefore there's no immediate benefit at all for reunification, even served as a deterrent, therefore it didn't happen. even before the 2000s, most political leaders in Taiwan believed that communist China WILL collapse, so nobody took the idea seriously. unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on from what perspective you look at the matter, it did not collapse, instead growing into a economic power house and major world power. nowadays, many regional cities in China already have similar living standard compared to Taiwan, with the secondary and major cities surpassed Taiwan, and the trend continues. therefore to me it's just inevitable that the reunification WILL HAPPEN NATURALLY before 2025. politics becomes nonsense when people don't need to worry about their welfare, as simple as that.

"One Country, Two Systems" is the appeasement policy to bring Taiwan region into P.R. China. It was a compromise when the Main Land did not have enough power( the combination of military, economic and international political) to overcome the compounded difficulties presented at Taiwan Strait and the potential of loss of lives. The philosophy of "Winning the war without a single shot" is also driving the policy from behind. After 40 years of economic growth and recent resurrection of Chinese traditions among general population, Beijing has become more confident in its power to resolve the Taiwan issue for good with or without force. The initiative for final resolution lies squared in the hands of Beijing. There are only two road blocks that preventing Beijing to launch the operation: 1) The possibility of a US-led intervention; 2) The inevitable loss of lives would take years to heal. The evidence of Beijing is actively dealing with the road blocks can be found in the speed of expansion for Chines Navy and the training for the military in general. The military's war readiness has been much more improved since 2013. And Chinese military strategists are actively developing deterrence measures in the East and South China Sea. The island building operation can be seen as part of preparation for Taiwan. As of now, the South China Sea is firmly in the hands of Chinese military. So, Beijing's attention is shifting toward East China Sea and the military exercise in Jul 2018 can be seen as the start of a, what could be, series of actions to strengthen the presence in the region. Once the control for East China Sea is acquired, Beijing is ready for the final chapter of the civil war. Since there is no peace treaty or truce agreement, technically, Beijing doesn't need to declare war on Taiwan and the whole process could start like what happened in 1958 (the second crisis). The major operation could be over in just a weekend and the whole military operation could be over in a week. The rebuilding and reconciliation process could start after a month. The timeline is under the assumption of no heavy fighting. The PLA will anticipate for heavy fighting and heavy casualties that's why the major operation could be very heavy handed and bloody. But, as long as it doesn't turn into protracted conflict, the healing process could be a lot easier with a short war. Like it or not, Taiwan will never be able to separate from China. The political process has becoming more costly for both sides as DPP is actively seeking independence. The trigger for the final episode of the civil war could be the trade war with the US when it reaches to a certain level or span out of control.
@Asianometry
6 жыл бұрын
It’s always dangerous to go into any conflict assuming it will be short. We should consider the difficulties of transporting thousands of troops across 100 miles of the Strait and also preventing other countries (such as Japan) from getting sucked in. What factors can you cite for assuming an amphibious attack - of which a scale has never succeeded before in history - can succeed in 7 days? I guess my question to you is: Has there ever been a short war of any sort in the past 50 years? And would it resolve things in a way that a political solution wouldn’t?
@lw3626
6 жыл бұрын
Asianometry Sino-India conflict (1962) and Sino - vietnam(1979) are both short. The Chinese military has demonstrated the will, speed and clear objectives in fighting both wars. The 1991 gulf war can be also used as a reference point as to how this upcoming one will look like. The PLA has been modeling itself to the US since the first gulf war. This military operation in Taiwan will be a combination of air superiority, full control of electronic domain, airborne, amphibious landing and missile/rocket strike, unmanned drones providing air and recon support. Marines lead the way and armmed police wrap things up. It is no longer two dimensional landing operation. And the objective will be very clear - the war will end whenever the authority announce that it will stop fighting and surrender. The will to fight on both sides are different too. For PLA, it is the patriotic reunification war. And for Taiwan, it is a self-defense war but with separatism underlined. The will among common men is different too. In mainland, the support for reunification is at 97%. In Taiwan, the support for fighting is around 5%. No one wants a war, but the political process has been stalled. And Beijing is risking paying a higher price for reunification in the future. It is a simple math problem as to where this issue is headed.
@lw3626
6 жыл бұрын
Asianometry war has never been the end by itself in Chinese military philosophy. The military option is a mean to an end (political resolution). For that, you can reference 1948 battle between CCP and KMT in Beijing Tianjin area. Heavy fighting is used as stimulant for political solution. One more reference was the stalemate in Korean peninsula in 1952. The fighting was for what either side could not get on the bargaining table. Beijing has to have to will and the ability to fight before it can sit down for negotiation. What the country lost on battle field , one can never get back from the negotiating table.
@lw3626

Asianometry And finally, there is an old Chinese philosophy script : when dealing with small opponent, using good virtues; when dealing with large opponent, using good wisdom. The main land has laid the plan on the table for four decades, and it has never changed its position on Taiwan. When the relationship across the strait was good, Mainland China would do absolutely everything in its power to support the livelihood of people on the island. I would say it is a perfect demonstration of good virtue. On the other hand, Taiwan has been seeing itself as something of a higher morale being to its mainland counterpart, and trying to rely on foreign power to achieve independence goal. These actions are ripping the old scare of 150 years of humiliation for Mainland. The more of such actions, the faster bothsides get to the final showdown. I would say that is not wisdom.
