@@drana150 I'm happy to hear that, and I was speaking more generally. The main reasons I say they aren't for kids are the fact that chinchillas are so nocturnal they are often most active when children are going to bed and that they don't really like being handled because of the temperature difference. basic guide of how to look after a chinchilla for the people who ONLY want one for their cuteness~ the recommended cage size for only ONE is literally as big as a fridge! their diet is about 70% hay and 30% pellets. they are very messy and poop A LOT! you must have at least 30 minutes to an hour daily to take your chin out of their cage to play with it and let them run around. they overheat SUPER easily (for obvious reasons) and anything over 80°F can kill a chinchilla. THEY ARE NOT LAP PETS! like i said they overheat easily and your body heat is not helping! of corse there’s many other things but please note all these important things before you get one and please do your research before getting ANY animal!!

I actually own a chinchilla and I save $20 a month($40 for the first 2 years) for that chinchilla. I usually have 1-2 dollars every month after buying everything for it, (food, dust bath, bedding, etc) (I usually buy in bulk to save money) so I have 240 dollars for this chinchilla saved up at this moment. That is just enough to allow me to raise another chinchilla for another year.

Both fish and hamsters require more care than what people think. So just do your research to properly care for your pet. Don't trust pet stores usually they will lie to make a quick buck

To paraphrase Despicable Me, "They're so fluffy they're gonna die!" 150 - that's how many chinchillas have to be killed to make a coat. 😢

As a former chinchilla owner I can just say that chinchillas can be really tame and sociable. The issue with them is that they are nocturnal so they sleep when you're awake and runs a racket when you're trying to sleep. A chinchilla has around 10 000 strands of hair per hair sack, thus the fluffyness. They also live around 15 years or more so it's a longterm commitment. I want a chinchilla again, but I don't have the space anymore. They need huge cages, minimum 1,5m×2m×50cm. So basically their own room.

Why bother genetically engineering a dog with chinchilla dna? If you want something big and fluffy that doesn't give a crap about you until you feed it, cross a chinchilla with a bear! xD Just think about Chinchilla Bear Skin rugs! Nevermind the mental image of what it would look like.

Just stating the obvious, you should ALWAYS do research on how to care for a pet and calculate the costs (food, veterinarian, special needs, time, space, etc.) BEFORE you get any pet. I've never personally owned a pet because I know I don't have the space, and am not willing to put the time and money into properly caring for it. My sister on the other hand has always had to have pets, and far too often she has not had the space or money to care for them, and has dumped them on our parents repeatedly.

Back when I breed rabbits, I refused to sell them a month or less before Easter because parents would buy them for their kids Easter gifts, but had no idea how to take care of them, and they wound up dirty and sick. Then they wanted me to refund them their money and nurse a sick animal back to health. Rabbits aren't even that hard to care for, but you have to KNOW HOW, and it's not something a six year old can do by themselves. Ugh.

I got a Chinchilla and taking care of him is not that hard. The hardest part of owning my Chinchilla is keeping him cool. I don't have AC so it's been a hassle keeping his room cold enough. And them dust bathing is the cutest thing in the fucking world. Google Chinchilla Dust Bathing right now, you will not be disappointed.

Thought I might share this. All of my pets were given to me by someone who didn't have the time for them. My sister gave me her two box turtles, turtles are the most commonly abandoned pet. They don't like people much and the most interaction I get out of em is when they want food. My cockatiel was given to me by my cousin who had just started work, was still in school and getting ready to move house. She's a good bird who likes to steal my chicken, cheez-its and rice. She's a brat and hisses at me when she doesn't get her way.😅 I also have a lop ear bunny who I managed to house train. He's a very old boy. I got him from a friend of my mom's who had a daughter who went to college and couldn't have him in the dorm. I guess no one else in the family wanted him so, I'm his mama now. I let him run around like the dogs do but, he mostly keeps to his cage/litter box unless I'm in the area and he wants attention.

God these babies are just precious! Trust me, they are the softest thing you will ever touch in your life. I remember in school my science teacher kept one along with a bunch of other animals like parakeets, Guinea pigs, hamsters, and even an adorable little prairie dog. Easily the best class I ever had and the only teacher I ever liked.

My family had a chinchilla for about 16 years it died of old age very cute but I grew up know ing alot about exotic pets we had two green iguanas and I own a bearded dragon and leopard gecko now so prolly the reason I don't see chinchillas as all that tough because they dont require heat and humidity adjustments like reptiles do lol

Karl, you would not be able to properly look after a fish. They take more fish maintenance than cats, dogs, rats, and snakes combined.

This is very ironic, considering that pet fish are some of the most mistreated animals people tend to buy and not give the proper care they need. Fish are very complex animals and can live a really long time if given the proper care, but most of them die from neglect, specially goldfish(who can live over a decade no problem if kept in good condition that doesn't cause them extreme pain or neurosis from being kept in small, non filtered tanks)

My family had a chinchilla as a pet when I was young, and it was super hard to take care of, we did everything that was on the care sheets for it and it just seemed miserable all the time in its cage (it was a huge cage we got for it from someone that had owned chinchillas for years) so we ended up giving it to the person that raised them and knew how to keep them happy and healthy. So thank you Karl for trying to educate people against them as pets as, whilst adorable, they are not something to own if you don't have the time and money to invest in them to ensure their health and happiness. (And for anyone wondering, Nibbles was his name and he lived happily for years after we had him)
