I'm looking at one just now. Keep going back to the eonon q53 pro. I want something that will autoconnect to my phone, ideally have a memory which will go back to where the unit was when the car was switched off, have RDS, and ideally a couple of spare usb so I can add Dab and Tpms etc at a later date. And if possible fit right into a mk6 golf. What would you be going for if that was what you were looking for?

Awesome video!! Before I ask my question, let me just get the background explained quickly. I have a Volvo C30, it’s in the P1 group which includes the S40, V50 and C70. They all have the somewhat famous "waterfall" centre console. I am looking to install an Android head unit, but I'm new at this and trying to figure out what to get. I'm a mechanic, I'm confident that I can manage the physical installation. The biggest problem I'm facing is that I have automatic double climate control, and I need the temp settings to be displayed on the new head unit. All other information is either not nessesary to display (volume, fan speed), already on a different display (cruise control, door indicator), or is shown by little led indicator lights on the centre console (heated seats, automatic AC on/off, fan-blow direction etc.). I need an android head unit that can take input from the centre console control buttons and steeringwheel buttons for the menues and radio etc. I also want it to have its own sim, so that it can run (with internet) completely on its own. And it should be a crisp and quick 7" (double din). I mean, I have found a few options, but the only one that I know of that can display the climate control temp setting is the bluepower BLP-990 unit. However, this just overlays the old screen, which looks really (in my opinion), really bad. It kind of ruins the point of installing a new head unit. I also does not like how it is mounted, and I've read many mixed reviews on bluepower, mainly that their units are often faulty and their support/service is close to non existent. You seem to be an expert on the field, and additionally maybe someone viewing this video might be able to help. Thanks again for the video!

Another good video and full of information. I bought a Joying head unit and it was for a land cruiser 2012. The guy fitting it said the unit plugs were all wrong, emailed Joying and they asked for lots of pictures but they then sent me another box to sit on the main andriod unit and took it down to car audio fitter on friday and he is happy now. Was impressed that Joying support and help. They sent the extra unit at thier cost and have been really helpful. It is being fully fitted next week so I m hoping it is all going to work. The guy is dubious about the DAB radio USB stick but will give it a go. If it all works, I shall be sending Joying an email of thanks as they have been great trying to sort out and said if not happy they will refund me. Cant ask better than that.

An update, having paid a car audio guy £ 410 to fit the unit, nothing worked, the steering controls, DAB radio and GPS did not work, I was livid. Emailed Joying they said check the connections, so I pulled out the unit, found the fitter and connected it up all wrong. I put the wires as per Joyings instructions which fitted had, and hey presto it works, I just have to sort out the hazard flasher unit which needs changing not Joyings fault. All in all they are a good company and will not walk away from a problem, always happy to help. I am upset that the fitters work, but only problem that I still have is the DAB+ works but signal is poor. Anyone tried a splitter unit so it uses the ariel in the side wilndows of the back of the car ? I will say again Joying have been brilliant

I recently bought an ATOTO F7 head unit. I love the features and being able to use CarPlay and Android Auto. However I was extremely disappointed with sound quality. It replaced my aging Pioneer DVD/MP3 player. The ATOTO claims a 4x45W power output but it barely powers even the OEM speakers. The Pioneer sounds light years better and I regret so much buying the ATOTO for this single reason. If you care about sound quality stay away from Chinese brands or consider an external amplifier.

I was also awfully disappointed in my ATOTO head unit because the Bluetooth wouldn't connect and the Wifi wouldn't re-associate with the access point without me manually connecting it. Also the sound seemed like absolute crap from the RCAs! (Coming from Kenwood Excelon head unit) I severely disliked how the ATOTO sounded. Not only this but also the ATOTO OVERHEATED all the time! When I run the warm air from the A/C, the head unit would freeze up and slow down because the processor was too hot! Never buy ATOTO again! More like ATOILET

I can echo this experience. I bought a VW android unit that came with a wiring harness was already wired, so I tested it with the built in amp first. It sounded slightly better than my old Sony unit, but it was a little noisy at all volume levels and added distortion at loud levels. The unit also heated up a lot after a short test at max clean levels. So I chopped the speaker outputs on the harness and wired a cheap tramps ts400x4 to the line outputs. I cramed it right behind the android unit since they are so shallow. The taramps is so much quieter at all volume levels, and much louder. It pushes my stock speakers right to their limits with a nice clean signal. Reminds me of Pioneer units back in the day.

Definitely a neat idea for sure, but there's certainly more to it when it comes to FM Radio, video input for rear camera, controls for the DSP module, etc- if you're a programmer with lots of time on your hands, wonderful! If not, man, it's going to be a messy project. I used to assemble car media systems using Centrafuse and Roadrunner software based on PC installation and it was a total blast because the very well-done software solutions for typical car stereo use was already done. Centrafuse Auto for Raspberry Pi today would be an absolutely killer project.

Thanks for the video and “big picture” info, haven’t found anything similar or as exhaustive. Great job! Now, I’m in EU and anything imported will be slapped with customs and vat. Vat is always counted on product + shipping... even if you order from within the EU. You don't see it because vat is already counted in the shipping price, just as it is counted into the sticker price of the item... So, no need to wait for an EU distributor, as you'll pay for the vat on his product price, (shipping to him will be counted into his product pricing) and shipping to you...

I wish Joying had a way to be able to turn on rear camera at will while driving in reverse like they allow with the front camera. Sure I could splice with a Y cable from reverse camera into front camera input into the joying but it would have been so much nicer if Joying did it by default. Imagine having your back seat full cause you're moving or going camping. Being able to turn on the backup camera would be clutch. Also anyone else prefer to just hear his voice instead of his voice plus music? I do like that the Joying is so clean without buttons or name brand on the screen. I use it with my steering wheel buttons so if you don't have steering wheel buttons to control volume, etc... It may not be right for you. The joying will not allow notifications of any kind in the notification panel. I have text messaging ability and 4G LTE on my joying. And I also use email on my joying. It never notifies me which is a bummer. Joying also locks down Bluetooth OBD2 scanners. So none of my OBD2 scanners will communicate with Joying. I assume it's because Joying wants you to buy their OBD2 reader Another thing, I wish Joying would come out with an OLED screen with high nits. I'd happily pay $1k USD for this. My convertible vehicle with the top down is a hard time to see the screen with the sun out. They should also remove the chrome trim around the headunit. It blinds you when the sun hits it just right. On my 11.6" Joying I removed the trim and painted it matte black. But would be nice to have it black from Joying.

I bought an Android 10" HU for my Lancer, it worked great for about 6 years, I still think it was a bargain for the money, so much so I've gone to the same supplier and bought a new one just this week. The price has gone up but the new one have 4Gb RAM and 64Gb internal storage. 10" screen, free iGO maps, and apparently this new one works with Apple CarPlay.

I have two issues, not sure if you can help. 1. I've noticed some people have had issues with battery drain on Android units. Fixes have been posted on here but it concerns me it should happen at all. It seems to be a thing of Android units not switching completely off. 2. DAB USB units. Some have had issues with them failing or not giving a good reception. I don't really want to get a DAB unit installed and then find it fail a few months later. What's your experience? Finally, many thanks for your videos. Last week I knew zero about Android units, I've watched all your vids and you seem to be the main guy creating this. Certainly in the UK anyway. Without you, I'd have no idea, so cheers.

Decent head unit won't kill you battery. My car is left at various airports for weeks and I can always start it when I return to the UK. They sit on standby for a period of time to allow instant on, but don't drain battery. DAB, it's reliant on the antenna you're using and of course the area

quality mobile video tested these android units, he just tested the dasaita vivid 10 and the head unit only puts out 13 watts rms. the rca preouts are only 3v at most. i know you said fibre optics are better for digital amps but 4 channel amps are class a/b. who makes a class d 4 channel. you also need to mention the lack of customer service on these android units. since retail shops dont carry them, theres no expert to just go to for help on minor things. you will have to go back and forth with emails and some of them dont reply back after numerous amounts of emails are sent. there are some nice ones who just sends over a new unit lol

My biggest winge with Android HU (on my second) is they are only supported / updated for 12 months. After that you get no firmware or OS updates. Apps keep updating to works with newer OS, so tend to grind slower and slower on outdated system. At least this is my interpretation of what is going on. After 2 years it’s annoying and by 3 years it’s unusable (assuming you want realable-ish navigation. Oh and seriously how bad is YT music offline…

Thanks for another excellent video, with lots of information and no waffle. I have been looking to change the radio in my VW Passat B7 for a while and had a couple of units from Amazon which I had to return as they didn't really deliver on the advertised spec. I never even got around to installation, but I think this video might just nudge me in the right direction. The B7 has two different antenna connectors, one DAB Fakra connector and one AM/FM. Are there any Android units with Fakra connectors or am I going to have to buy a suitable adaptor? Can the existing hands free mic be used and finally I like to look at an online manual for any bit of tech I buy. Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. And thanks again for all of your videos.

Hello! I don't know if you're still looking for a head unit. I have a B7 Passat as well and currently have a Joying unit in my car. I haven't seen any HUs that have fakra connectors, so you have to get one. Most decent units specifically for VW will include an adaptor, although buying one is safe. The original mic cannot be used, but many HUs have built-in mic and often come with external mic.

great video! Lately we have the newer intel based headunits like Joying and other FYT units which are labelled TS10. Some even claim to have QLED screens. Do you have any comments on the performance and mod community support on those? xda developers still have vast px5 px6 upgrades and mods. Hal9k and Malaysk come to mind. Please review those when you get a chance.

@@matthewnewell4517 That's true but it's really not that complicated... I heard how my car sounded with the oem system which I believe was Sony. Then I swapped it out for a xtron unit everything else being the same and the difference in sound quality is night and day. If it was for my van I wouldn't care less and would go for the features Chinese units offer... A normal name brand head unit is far superior to any of these Android head units. Three biggest problem with most of these Android units is the software if often half baked or poorly designed. Then we can talk about the hardware, including the amplification and line outputs being underpowered. Lastly, Android isn't suited for this task, and this can be a significant annoyance. A normal head unit doesn't have all the overhead as Android. So when you turn the car on, the radio turns on very quickly. Android units try to reduce that boot time by having the unit go into a low power mode, but it's still running. Then, after several minutes, if you haven't returned to your car, it might go into something like a hibernate mode or even full power off. Then comes the annoying pay off having to wait for the unit to full boot before you can start using it or hear music. Android is also designed to perform some degree of multitasking. So apps can run in the background. This sometimes causes apps to play sounds when you don't want it, and you have to manually kill the app, usually by going back to the app and closing it before launching a new app. Car head units didn't have this problem. Conversely, it's that multitasking that allows you to use navigation and a music player at the same time, so it's definitely necessary. Let's talk about the software for a second. My current Android unit has an equalizer app. This is one example of very crappy software. The frequencies are really inaccurate. 5k adjusts some of the bass. The frequencies are very stupidly chosen. Where even though it is 10 bands, it's not full octave frequencies. For some reason, someone thought they needed 13k and 14k. But, since we already know the frequencies are very inaccurate, it's anyone's guess what they actually are. And since the devices are locked, with lots of standard settings hidden, and the typical inability to remove or disable these poor factory apps, it becomes something you just live with,. Or, maybe with the rise in popularity, some developers will make some decent apps. The problem there is, if you actually want to add a control for the subwoofer output, strangely missing from the system, the developer would have to design an app that's compatible with your player. We really need some developers and others to get together and deep drive into how these systems work with the hardware to fix these problems and then we may truly have a great Android car player.
