According to Radii, here's the Rihanna explanation: It goes back to her 2011 single “We Found Love”, which fans in China took to referring to as 潍坊的爱 wei fang de ai - Weifang sounding like “we found” and 爱 being the character for “love”. Weifang is also a city in Shandong province. When RiRi released “Where Have You Been” not long afterwards, some Chinese netizens took to calling it 威海油饼 Weihai you bing - Weihai also being a city in Shandong and youbing being a type of breakfast pancake.

Fun fact : The reason why these nicknames exist is because the character system in Chinese makes it so that the actual names of the celebrity is very time consuming to type out on the most commonly used Chinese keyboard (pinyin). The characters used for names are often uncommon ones that, after typing out the pinyin, you'd still have to scroll down quite a while and search for the character you want. Plus, foreign names are often way more complex than Chinese names.

Chinese people are unapologetically blunt / honest that it’s not only funny, but somewhat refreshing

I had a Chinese friend that was HILARIOUSLY blunt, no-nonsense, and would sugarcoat NOTHING. "Hey Sarah, why are you going to *instert random after school activity*? You don't need to. Tell your parents that youre too tired." *laughs hysterically for a few seconds, transitions to deadpan and stares at me with her black irises* "It's because I'm Asian." Or, my favorite; *goes to a big city near us, sees Mandarin on the back of a truck, pulls out the google translate photo op* "Hm... what does this say...?" Sarah: "Oh I dont know, msybe ask one of the THREE CHINESE PEOPLE sitting behind you?!?" Will: "I'm half Bri'ish." Sarah: "Okay two and a half." "I didn't want to assume incorrectly!" Bobby: *has already translated the entire thing and is now speaking to Will in current Mandarin* Me: *is confused* Bobby: "Hey aren't you studying world languages?" Me: "Yeah but I changed my major to teaching, better job security." Sarah: "Why the hell would you do that?!? You won't make any money!" She's an absolute gem

In Chinese culture, if a name consists of two repeated characters, then it's supposed to be a cute adorable name. Chinese fans definitely chose the cute name Meimei for Taylor on purpose, since she did have a lovely country girl image for many years. Btw the Chinese/Mandarin word for younger sister is also Meimei - different characters but sound very similar to Taylor's nickname. Double confirmation that Chinese fans really just adore Taylor as a cute little sister.

To my American ears, the pronunciation sounds like"SaBatsujen," which is close enough Auto Correct wanted to make it Sebastian. 😅
