That's a great idea Possum. Maybe I'll rig something like that up. 👍😊

Because that would raise the boiling point and overheat the engine unless I used a radiator, fan and thermostat. All failure-prone components. By running pure rainwater in a hopper, the water boils off at whatever rate it takes to maintain 212F. That is a perfect running temperature for a diesel engine.

very nice! just bought the same engine. Have a 250 amp alternator on it to charge my battery bank on cloudy days or just need more power. has the stock hopper on it. want to plumb it so I don't have to worry about the water boiling away.

I like the simplicity and reliability of the hopper. In fact, this one came with a radiator. I removed it before I ever even cranked it the first time. Personally I would keep the hopper and rig it so water runs into the hopper at a trickle, or maybe put a float valve in it to add water when it falls below a set level. I've considered doing that with this one.

After two years on the road and about twenty in Oklahoma, we are back in Texas. I like to say we returned to our roots but some would say it was back to the scene of the crime. Look for my video, The life and times of Jim Foreman Part 2

I'm picking one up this weekend for $100. Its a brand new old stock, been sitting in a shed collecting dust for 20 years. 8kw, can't pass the deal up! How do you like your china generator? Does it maintain a steady voltage/hertz under different loads?

You mentioned the generator head as being reliable....what can you say about the engine? I have the 5Kw china head mated to a yamaha air cooled thats very thrifty on diesel and will pick up a similar setup such as yours. That has never been started. Are these engines reliable and worth working on?

In my opinion, yes. Mine still runs. As far as I know though, you can't get them in the USA anymore. Thanks to the EPA "protecting" us from non-throwaway engines.

Is the cooling system water container an issue if it freezes over ??? air cooled would be better or worse ??? any thoughts ?
@Possumliving

It could be a problem if it freezes. I just open the drain valve when I'm not using it. Air cooled is less fuel efficient, but removes cooling system worries.

cooey84 ST 7.5 KW, 4 pole 1800 rpm. It is an all cast iron, brush type generator that weighs about 300 lbs. Made in China. I've had it for over 15 years, and it has been 100% reliable.

nice, I searched it and found them on ebay, little newer style with vents sticking out on the side. I'm thinking of ordering a 12kw for my Lister SR2 engine and a 20 kw for a 4 cylinder Perkins I might get.

cooey84 I recommend getting the 12 wire 3 phase version if you can, at least on the larger one. You can still wire it for single phase, but it gives you more options.

I had a generator setup like that for the house I built in Black Forest, Colorado where ice storms could bring down lines for a week or longer at a time. It was run on poropane. I had to use it for four days one time. Check out my KZitem video called My Life In Colorado.
