Indeed our sisters and brothers in China are giving a good picture of Islam to the people who come in contact with them. I lived in Japan some 20 years ago and I remember very vividly meeting a young Japanese man in the city of Sendai. He came to the city's small prayer hall because there was no mosque in the city of Fokushima in the neighbouring prefecture. He was so happy to show the certificate of conversion from the islamic centre in Tokyo. That young man was fascinated by chinese muslims when he visited the country and ended up becoming Muslim..MashAllah.

welcome brother, Canton was one of the first region in China that has a huge Muslim community since 1000 years ago and if i'm not mistaken one of the oldest mosque in China was in Canton. SO cantonese Muslim is our earliest brothers! But during the Song dynasty there was a conflict with the emperor and the Muslim community there because the chinese nobles are jealous of the prosperity of the Muslim merchants over there so 800 000 Muslim were killed and a lot of them fled to South East Asia and married locals here. Im not sure the Mosque is still there or not. But Arabs used to call Canton as Zaitun.

I have many Chinese friends in Australia and lived with them for a couple of years. I completely agree with Dr. Naoki that somehow any non-East Asian way of dawah and articulation of Islam somehow doesn't penetrate. Most of them agree logically with everything Islam offers. However, there is still an invisible barrier, which as a non-Chinese, I don't think I'll ever be able to overcome. We need to sow the seed to cultivate indigenous East Asian scholars speaking to their community in their own language within their context. I visited Kashgar in Xinjiang in 2000 by road from Pakistan. The centrepiece of this Silk Route town was the 12th-century Id Kah Mosque (Eid Gah). It is a distinctive yellow colour edifice and is in every tourist photograph. Since I was working in Saudi Arabia, I carried with me gifts of tasbih, round hats with gold embroidery and other small gifts. After the Jumah prayers, I distributed them in the masjid and was greatly appreciated by the local Uighurs. Fast forward to today, the same masjid is closed, turned into a museum. Uighur civil servants are not allowed to grow a beard and are not allowed to fast in the Ramadan. The repression in Xinjiang is true and is publicized in Canada, where I live, by Uighur leaders such as Rabia Khidr etc. The conflict between the Uighurs and the government is not about religion but about nationalism and separation as a nation. The translation of Xinjiang in English is "New March". It was conquered by the Qing government in about 1750s. After the fall of Czar Xinjiang enjoyed short independence and was called Turkistan. In Canada, at Muslim gatherings, one sees blue Turkistan flags.

Interesting fact : the number of Muslim in China is more than the number of population in Malaysia. There are 3 theories in how Islam came to Nusantara : 1. From Hadramaut 2. From India 3. From China

Simple : Mongol Yuan Dynasty. Mongol don't like Han Chinese so they flood in Persian, Arab and Uyghur into China.

The famous and original martial art in indonesia and Malaysia called Silat is related to Islam too, probably the same like Kungfu in China as Prof Naoki explain

There are certain British culture/institutions that were incredibly Islamic. I am particularly impressed with the evolution of the British legal system and the attention to justice over the past few centuries. The application of the idea of interpretation of law based on precedence is one of the great achievements of history.

This session was so rich of excellent information! Thank you both for your research and bringing this to us. Dr Naoki is so correct that we need to come out of the nationalistic mindset and work together and learn from all the experts in the Ummah. Thank you for all your hard work in breaking barriers.

*CHINESE MUSLIM FIGURE* Many people already know that the legendary maritime figure from China, Sam Poo Kong alias Muhammad Cheng Ho is a Muslim (*Very well known in Indonesia). But it seems that there are still many who do not know that there are still many legendary Chinese figures who turn out to be Muslims. Two of them are Wong Fei Hung and Judge Bao. So far, we only know Wong Fei Hung as a Kung fu master in Once Upon A Time in China. In the film, the character of Wong Fei Hung is played by famous Hong Kong actor, Jet Li. But who exactly is Wong Fei Hung? Wong Fei Hung is a legendary scholar, healer, and martial artist whose name was designated a National Hero of China by the Chinese government. However, the Chinese government often tries to obscure Wong Fei Hung's identity as a Muslim in order to maintain the supremacy of Communist power in China. Wong Fei-Hung was born in 1847 in Kwantung (Guandong) to a devout Muslim family. The name Fei in Wong Fei Hung is a Cantonese dialect for the Arabic name, Fais. While the name Hung is also a Cantonese dialect for the Arabic name, Hussein. So, in Arabic, his name is Faisal Hussein Wong. His father, Wong Kay-Ying, was a Ulama, and a traditional healer, as well as an expert in traditional Chinese martial arts (wushu/kung fu). His father owns a medical clinic called Po Chi Lam in Canton (capital of Guandong). Wong Kay-Ying is a scholar who mastered the science of high-level wushu. Wong Kay-Ying's high martial arts skills made him known as one of the Ten Kwantung Tigers. The position of the Kwantung Tiger was later passed on to Wong Fei Hung. The combination of knowledge of traditional medicine and martial arts techniques and supported by noble character as a Muslim made the Wong family often intervene to help the weak and oppressed at that time. That's why the Kwantung people respect and idolize the Wong Family.
