My brother was a translator for the US Air Force. He could speak flawless Korean. He did not look Korean. In fact, he looked like a 6'2" Leave It To Beaver double. He tells the story of how he and a buddy were out walking around Seoul, and some native girls started talking abour their hair cuts. After they had completely talked their way into embarrassment my brother and his friend spoke up in perfect Korean to thank them for their kind words. He said they got red with embarrassment and just giggled.

A friend spent several years in Iraq as a forklift operator for KBR. Over 6 foot, blue eyes, grey haired and balding. Surrounded by Arabic speakers. It was three years before someone annoyed him enough that he responded in perfect Arabic, with a Lebanese accent. He had understood them the entire time and they never knew, had no idea that his whole family is Lebanese and most of his uncles look like Max Klinger (without the pretty dresses.) He could see them all thinking back to all the things they might have said in his presence and worrying.

Sometimes people get upset because they understand that no actual chinese person would expect southerners to understand the language. So it's disrespectful in a way since they know you're messing with them and think you're saying something funny about them.

This is true. It is disrespectful in a subtle way. Someone who's being forthright first asks if someone speaks Chinese. They wouldn't come at them with it, and they definitely wouldn't come to the U.S. assuming they could just talk to anyone in Chinese. Skipping over that part is impolite, or presumptive. I'd say it ranks pretty low on the disrespect scale though.

@@JSLing-vv5go yeah I see it as low scale disrespectful also, but both of us don't know the context or how he would approach someone. On the other hand though, some people are assholes when others speak to them in any language ha ha.

While I enjoyed this 'acted' prank, I still prefer Xiaoma surprising communities by looking out of place, then opening that mouth of many languages!

Very nice making friends. Way to go guys. It's a shame language separates us. Imagine a world where we could all speak each others language. Then our leaders couldn't separate and pit us against one another and we could all live in peace, friendship and harmony. Again, good job guys.

I want to see a video of the moment he realized who you really are, how many people follow you and how many languages you actually speak. I feel like his head might have actually exploded.
