Our adorable patient is an infant with hip dysplasia without dislocation and she is supported on a harness. Her mother was told that she might need surgery to fix her dysplasia but thankfully she found Dr. Rogini!
Dr. Rogini was able to restore the blood flow and functionality of the hip though chiropractic which lead to avoiding the need for surgery.
Chiropractic is so powerful because it aligns the body structurally so that it can heal internally. Many people are not aware of how beneficial chiropractic is in being preventative of degeneration, surgeries and medication.
What is Hip Dysplasia?
Hip health in a baby is important because this simple knowledge can help you help your baby from developing long term issues like pain as an athlete or arthritis later on in their life. You may have heard about hip dysplasia from your doctor or midwife as your baby will be screened at birth and/or during their newborn check-ups for hip dysplasia. Hip Dysplasia is often referred to as a
Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip or DDH and is generally the preferred term for babies and children with hip dysplasia since this condition can develop after birth. DDH is a medial term for general instability, or looseness, of the hip joint.
The term Congenital Dislocation of the Hip (CDH) tends to refer to a defect where something is missing or added to normal tissues. In the case of DDH, the infant/child’s joint is otherwise normal except for the instability.
Causes
• Joint laxity
• Ligamentous laxity - pregnant mothers secrete a hormone called relaxin intentionally causing ligamentous laxity in preparation for the delivery through the pelvis, but this hormone can be passed into the babies bloodstream causing laxity within their ligaments, hence loosening the hip joint
• Breech babies - due to the prolonged pelvic flexion experienced in utero or due to the pressures put on the hips during a breech delivery
• Family history - around one third of babies with DDH have a blood relative with the condition
• Twins - due to the lack of space in the uterus and hence increased pressure on the pelvis during gestation.
Signs and Symptoms
• Stiff hip joint(s)
• Different leg lengths
• Uneven gluteal folds of the bottom
• One knee looks higher then the other when bent
• A clunking sound when the hip is rotated
How Common is Hip Dysplasia or DDH?
1 in 10 Infants are born with hip instability
1 in 100 Infants are treated for hip dysplasia
1 in 500 Infants are born with completely dislocated hips

Chiropractic co-management is appropriate in cases of DDH as the biomechanical dysfunction caused by the hip will have a direct effect on pelvic and spinal alignment. Chiropractic treatment can help restore proper movement and biomechanics of the spine pelvis and sacrum after a prolonged period of no movement.
Our treatment plan for our infant patient
• Chiropractic adjustments twice a week
• Continued wear of the harness so as to let the joint develop fully
• Exercise routine & massage tips given to the parents to help increase mobility, blood flow and to prevent muscular atrophy.
